I know it certainly looks like I haven't a clue about GS at all, but I have a question that is going to sound pretty simple, but I just don't know the answer...
Do the girls have to earn all the brownie patchs? I was just noticing that there are A LOT of patchs (I think I counted 50-something!?). I know the girls are going to be brownies for 3 ( Read more... )

Girls do not have to earn any patches. Earning patches is just a great way to organize activities and be recognized for them.

As for if they earn them all what to do with them, someone else will have to answer that, as I have no idea.

No, they don't have to earn ALL of the Try-its- or any of them. And when I was a Brownie, girls would put badges on the back of the vest/sash when the front was full. Hope this helps a little. :)

It's not that silly a question, considering I have seen some girls with a ga-gillion patches. I think they must not do the activities as in-depth as my leader used to when I was a Brownie. :)

I know the front of the vest should look pretty neat, so I'd keep that as pretty as possible, but as far as the back goes, if you were to run out of space, I've seen girls who string their badges together. It doesn't look as good, so I'd rather just wear less.

Man, I miss being a girl scout and earning badges so much!

in October 2008, the program levels are changing, and Brownies is becoming a 2 year program rather than three, so you will likely only get two years to do the try-its. Realistically you would spend one to two meetings per try-it (some require more time-consuming things than others), considering that, you will likely only earn 10-12 per year...make sure you involve the girls and let them choose which ones they want to work on and taylor your year to get those done, especially since you will only have 2 years to do it in!

and as the others said, when the front fills up you move to the back of the vest.

That is what I was going to do if no one said anything or anything usefull. One of the meetings coming up soon I am going to simply sit and talk to the girls and see what they want to do and what they enjoy. Take the time right then to talk about "compromise" because what one girl considers fun isn't always what another girl considers fun. So from the feedback I get from that meeting, I will figure out what they want to do most and go from there.

You were really helpful and thanks for the heads up about the Brownies being only 2 years.
