I swear I do more than just complain about my troop and my troop moms, but I need to talk about this... Keep in mind I have 11 1-grader brownies, 5 are from my original Daisy troop and the others are from an "adopted" Daisy troop, who's leader abandoned them last year. They were not very active and my girls always were active ( Read more... )

I'm not sure what you mean when you say you are wondering if you should get the council involved. Do you mean to have them back you up that you were called at the last minute and that your hands were tied in relation to which Brownie parent could be contacted? If this is the case, I honestly wouldn't bother. The council is probably busy enough and, frankly, so are you. :) If some parents have a problem with this and, more importantly, they do not accept your version of the truth (!!) then they're not worth the worry. You're doing a fabulous job running the troop and providing an important service for their daughters. If they have issues, they can leave. I'd not bring the issue up again with them and carry on as usual.

BTW I'm back in the UK from Canada and, oh, I miss those cookies! :(

Hubby is Canadian! :) If you want I can send you a box! :)

YOu are right. I am just going to carry on. I know where I stand and what I was able to do. I feel bad the other girls couldn't go, I do not feel ashamed of my choice, so I shouldn't feel the need to correct it.

Thanks!

I'm in the UK and we have parents just like that too! I just let them have their wee rant and know that (well mostly!) I've done the best I could with the time and resources available.

Remember, you can't please them all every time.

We dont' do cookies over here, I didn't realise you still did them in the US, I bet thats a great fundraiser?

Oh yes.... we've been able to sell cookies since January 5th and my daughter has already sold over 100 boxes. Then we have the booth sales, etc. What do you guys do for fundraisers?

We do sponsor events, craft sales and a Christmas gift catalogue here called Webb Ivory (you get a percentage of your total sales for funds)

My Guides like the Cheeky Monkey Marathon Challange that is run by a kids cancer charity. They give you all the materials you need, we do the event and the money raising and give them at least 50% of what we raise. The girls get rewards from the charity depending on how much they raise, which give them the incentive to raise more money! I like that one.

We did sell chocolate bars years back but that wasn't an official thing like the cookie idea.

Do you raise a good amount with the cookies?

Do you know why Nadia Comaneche became the famous Romanian gymnast over the other girls in her class? It's not because she was the best or had the prettiest smile. Because when Bela Karoli was given the chance to put one girl and one girl only into a competition at the last second possible, she happened to be the closest one ready to go ( ... )

Our council has a Charmers program. This is a program for those that want to participate in media type events, which all need photo releases and other things. Its also known that if you're part of the Charmers/marketeers program you could be called on a moment's notice to appear in uniform for something. I don't know if your council has somehting like that.

I wouldn't let it stress you out too much. You know that a limited number of girls could attend, and that you had to have an answer right away. There wasn't time to do it democratically amongst troop members and parents. You made a call as a leader. The girls that attended sound like they had a good time - so you're fine. Next time an opportunity presents itself it might be other girls that you call on.
