Girl Scout Gold Award requirements

I was having a debate the other day with a friend who had earned his Boy Scout Eagle Award. He was saying how the Girl Scout Gold Award didn't require as much and I didn't have enough evidence to win the debate. I did not earn my Gold Award, though I was still having fun my Senior years and that's what really matters to me. I graduated high ( Read more... )

I don't know the old requirements, but I thought I'd give you some info in case the topic came up again.
I just earned my Gold Award this past year, and it was a lot of work. Yes, the Studio 2B program changed some of the requirements (which I was not too fond of, seeing as I, too, am not a fan of Studio 2B), but the amount of work required to earn the award was exactly the same if not more.
In contrast to the Eagle Scout, boys earning their Eagle Scouts are allowed to count the hours in which volunteers help on their projects, whereas for the Gold Award only the individual earning the award's hours count. (I'm not sure exactly how many project hours were officially needed, but I had a total of 73.5.)

The old requirements included several dozen hours of pre-requesites (earn 3 badges, complete career exploration patch, personal development patch, leadership pin) capped by a 50-hour project. The project has to fit with the concepts of service and leadership, and while the leadership elements require leading others their hours are not counted. The hours spent formulating a project idea and writing up a project proposal did not count when I went through (early 2000's) but the rules have now changed so that up to 10 (ish) hours of planning count toward the tally, and the total hours requirement has been increased to 60 or 70.

My understanding is that the gold is comparable in size to an eagle project, but usually different in character. When I was at a joint boy/girl scout honor ceremony for these awards, the boys had mostly managed teams of volunteers to put in ramps to their churches and briges over trails, where the girls had done some building projects but also a huge variety of social action projects.

The "studio 2b" requirements are the same as the old ones, except the length or longevity of the project has been increased. As of December of this year though, the requirements are changing AGAIN to fit the "journies" we have now as leadership projects. Fortunately, I earned my Gold last year and got my award in May, so I will not be effected by the MASSIVE changes that were made in requirements and those have not been released yet ( ... )
