I just earned my Gold Award this past year, and it was a lot of work. Yes, the Studio 2B program changed some of the requirements (which I was not too fond of, seeing as I, too, am not a fan of Studio 2B), but the amount of work required to earn the award was exactly the same if not more.
In contrast to the Eagle Scout, boys earning their Eagle Scouts are allowed to count the hours in which volunteers help on their projects, whereas for the Gold Award only the individual earning the award's hours count. (I'm not sure exactly how many project hours were officially needed, but I had a total of 73.5.)

My understanding is that the gold is comparable in size to an eagle project, but usually different in character. When I was at a joint boy/girl scout honor ceremony for these awards, the boys had mostly managed teams of volunteers to put in ramps to their churches and briges over trails, where the girls had done some building projects but also a huge variety of social action projects.
