Program Exclusion

Oct 19, 2008 15:56

First SORRY about the previous post... my computer did something wierd.

Has anyone been excluded from their council programs or trainings or whatever? I have and I am pretty sure I am not the first. If anyone has any stories please share. Excluding girls from programs is unprofessional and definately not the message of Girl Scouts.

Thanks.

Well, I have a story. Back in the day (late seventies) I earned the First Class Award. Several years later, my council had a weekend honoring those who had earned the 'highest awards' the pamplets for the weekend camp did state that First Class Award holders were elegible to attend. My leader signed me up. It was suposed to be a relaxing time and mostly fun ( ... )

Is your council currently going or has already gone through realignment (merging with other councils)? If this is the case, that could be the cause for some confusion regarding program and training notification, registration or confirmation.
Also, at my council they started a new registration system (they spend a MONTH training on it) and there have been serious glitches. So this may also be a cause.
If you haven't heard anything back from the program/training you registered for, you should definitely call to confirm.

My council is currently going through a merger, but I have been looking into and discussing this program with council for the past 2 years. I was told no two weeks ago and I found out last week that they were making the same program availble to 3 other girls in the coucil.

My good friend's mother (let's call her J) was a service unit director, and the local council sent around a postcard to all of J's leaders saying "We are sorry to announce that she has decided to step down as your SU director" and she heard about it from her leaders - she did NOT choose to step down herself. Seems it was a mixup when the council changed which staff worked in her area, it was mentioned that J had been doing it for so long (20 years I think) that it was time for someone new to run the service unit and we should ask J if she'd like to retire, then nobody asked her, they just announced she was stepping down (both of the staff members who were moved around each thought the other had discussed it with her). Now she HAS stepped down and no one will step up to take her place, and the staff has to run that SU themselves, because she was so angry about it.

I am happy to hear that "J" stood up for herself. I think if more people did, GSUSA would actually be a democratically run organization rather than a dictatorship monarchy that its becoming.
