"Who is Zatoichi? Like the much beloved James Bond in the USA, "Zatoichi", is one of Japan's longest running film and TV series. "Zatoichi" came into being in 1962, and after 26 films and a TV series it ended in 1989 when the late Shintaro Katsu, the only man to ever bring Zatoichi to life, passed away, leaving the iconic role without a face."
Looking at the pictures for this film, I now know why it also seems familiar. Blind Swordsman with a cane/sword and platinum blond hair. Why, it's Rutger Hauer in Blind Fury! More internet searching seems to prove that Blind Fury is kind of a tribute to Zatoichi (episodes 6 and 7 especially).
Looks like it was a fun film. Now I'm jealous that I couldn't see it :( Must track it down when it comes out on DVD....
Apparently Paul Chen sells a Blind Fury Zatoichi sword that doubles as a walking stick... hmmm, I don't think the original zatoichi had platinum blond hair... but I did notice the resemblance between Rutger Hauer and this one (except that Rutger's a lot younger).
