Character Information
Name: Masaomi Kida
Canon Origin/Series: Durarara!!
School Year: 5
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Out of school living location: Soho, London, UK/Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan (Some summers)
Blood status: Muggleborn
Personality: Energetic and charismatic, Masaomi appears to be the most carefree person on earth. Unbelievably loyal to his friends, he is willing to do anything for them, even if it means throwing away his happiness and his life. Masaomi have a strange sense of humour, and people rarely finds his jokes funny, and while he enjoys flirting with girls, they almost never take his passes well. Neither of this makes Masaomi lose his spirit however, and he is genuinely liked by most because of his positive attitude. He basically appears to be the happiest person on the planet.
‘Appears’ is the keyword. The Masaomi which some people see is very far from the one on the other witness; Masaomi is the leader and creator of the Yellow Scarves, a street gang in Ikebukuro consisting of muggleborn and halfblood witches and wizards. He can be both violent and quite ruthless when provoked, while still keep his happy-go-lucky attitude. Even though young, the members in the Yellow Scarves listen to him, both because of his charisma but also out of respect; he have shown himself worthy of the title ‘General’ several times.
After his girlfriend Saki got caught up in the violence surrounding him, Masaomi got caught in a state of depression: he is forever stuck in the evening Saki got caught by the rival gang, unable to move on. He is quite able to hide this almost flawlessly however, and continues being the seemingly careless person as ever.
Canon Background: Masaomi is a student at Raira academy in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, where he moved when he was in middle school. Together with some friends, he created the gang the Yellow Scarves. Roaming the streets, fighting rival gangs, he eventually met Saki, a girl who he fell in love with and she in him. However, Saki was blindly loyal to a young man named Izaya, an information broker, and told Masaomi to trust him as well. So, reluctantly, he did. This resulted in that the Yellow Scarves began to outmanoeuvre the Blue Squares, a rivalling gang whom they had fought with (and lost to) for quite some time.
Cornered, the Blue Squares kidnapped Saki and broke her legs. Masaomi was on his way to save her, when he panicked and couldn't move. In the end, it was a group of defecting Blue Squares that saved Saki. Masaomi haven't been able to visit her in the hospital since then, and officially disbanded the Yellow Scares. The group continues without him however.
When his childhood friend, Mikado, moves to Ikebukuro as well, Masaomi start to feel as if his hard days are over. However, he is soon pulled into the gang wars again: this time with the gang the Dollars, and with the Slashers, whom attacked his friend Anri. The Dollars and the Slashers seem to be working together, however this is not the case. After Anri's attack, Masaomi stepped into the role as the General again; even with the growing suspicion that the Yellow Scarves wasn't really under his control.
In the end, he was overthrown by another member, Horoda, who wanted the gang to declare full out war against the Dollars. Pushing back whatever had hold him back from saving Saki, Masaomi decided to fight back, alone.
Background (AU!Canon; HP):
Masaomi comes from a muggle family from Japan, having moved to London because of his fathers work when Masaomi was three months old, and is the first wizard in his family as far as he knows. His life was normal for his first ten year, with the exception of a few randomly exploding glasses and jars, until the summer of Masaomi’s eleventh birthday. Spending that summer in Tokyo, he one day got a letter dropped by an exhausted owl in his lap while eating lunch. This was, of course, his Hogwarts letter and was thought to be a joke (a very funny one, too) until an elderly woman popped out of thin air a few minutes later, scaring the Kida family completely.
Masaomi entered his first year, found friends, and some enemies, and got grades that was alright, but not really brilliant except in Defence against the Dark arts (and later, Muggle studies).
It wasn’t until the summer before his third year everything began. Feeling increasingly bored, he and some of his friends decided to have some “fun”; picking fights with both muggle and wizard teenage gangs. They called themselves the Yellow Scarves, and started using such scarves as a mark. Slowly, the gang grew, and even though the gang’s activity noticeably lessened during the school year it still continued; now picking fights with purebloods that considered muggleborns and halfbloods of lesser worth and did everything to push them down. Quickly getting sick of this, some purebloods started fighting back; targeting lone Yellow Scarves with magic. It seemed as if the days of the Yellow Scarves were over...
Then, Saki entered Masaomi’s life. One day, she randomly sat down beside him during breakfast, smiled and asked if he was Masaomi Kida of the Yellow Scarves. He fell in love immediately, and she fell in love with him soon after. However, Saki was blindly trusting Izaya, a student that seemed to know everything about everyone, and while Masaomi didn’t trust Izaya... Saki always suggested he should follow Izaya’s advice. And eventually he did, and slowly they were able to take the lead over the purebloods. Everything was alright, and Masaomi started trusting Izaya completely.
One evening, someone Masaomi didn’t know contacted him through the journals. It was the leader of the purebloods they had fought against, who told him to come up to the owlery or they would hurt Saki even more. The next second a curse was mumbled, followed by a snapping sound and Saki’s scream.
Masaomi panicked, tried to contact Izaya who just wouldn’t answer, and with Saki’s scream ringing in his ears, he ran towards the owlery. The panic, however, stopped him from reaching it. It froze him just in front of it, and instead of him saving Saki, a group that had turned against the pureblooded leader did.
Afterwards, Masaomi left the Yellow Scarves, who even though they were now leaderless continued. They also continued trying to make him rejoin, even with continued refusals by him they still considered him their General.
The curse put on Saki’ legs made them impossible to heal by magic, and it is uncertain whether or not she would ever be able to walk again. Masaomi can’t bring himself to visit her; neither in St. Mungo’s nor during the short time she spent in the Hospital Wing.
Trying to forget everything but being reminded by everything all the time, Masaomi is now in a well-masked depression, hiding under his energy, his bad jokes and his carefree attitude. He is completely set on trying to make his fifth year at Hogwarts a good year.
