01. Of demons and angels
It’s colder than she expected it might be, in that deserted dark alley where they agreed to meet. It rained earlier that evening, and chilly dampness fills the air, creeping up her exposed arms and underneath the thin fabric of her dress.
He is late, just as she thought he would be: a demonstration of power, obviously. Ruby feels rather angry anyway. Waiting has never been her forte, and it’s much more difficult now, with the Apocalypse lurking just behind the corner.
The lamps’ light flicker and dance for a moment, and then go back to normal; there is no sound to be heard and Ruby feels an urge to just shrug and leave without having accomplished anything.
This is, of course, when the demon arrives.
For a member of Hell’s aristocracy, he looks surprisingly on the handsome side; she got used to male demons going for hideous and scary rather than simply menacing.
“Little demon,” he says, managing to keep most of the contempt out of his voice. “Why were you seeking me?”
Ruby does her best to look a little intimidated. “I can give you some good intel,” she says. “About the angels.”
He pauses, but doesn’t seem all that surprised.
“We’ve heard… stories,” he says. “That an angel dragged you out of the Pit. We thought it were just rumours.”
She smirks. “I have a scar on my back to prove that tale right,” she says. “So. Do you want to strike a deal with me?”
“You’ve been known to work against your betters, time and time again,” the demon muses. “What’s in it for you this time?”
He’s been said to value sincerity. Ruby looks him right in the eye and ventures,
“My own gain, what else? The Apocalypse can’t be stopped, I know that now. I don’t want to spend the eternity rotting in Hell.” She pauses for breath. “I have some good info. I know what the angels are up to.”
The demon nods.
“I’ll see what I can do,” he lies, reaching out a hand. She’d haggle to get a better promise out of him, but there is no time for that.
“Thank you,” she says. They shake hands.
“So?” he asks, impatiently. “Where are the angels?”
“Here,” says Castiel out of the darkness of the alley. The demon turns around, surprised, but doesn’t even have time to make a sound when Ruby’s knife cuts deep into his back and right through the heart. He sinks to the pavement, dead.
Ruby walks by him and towards the angel; Castiel grabs her by her wrists and pulls in for a kiss. She clings to him, thinking with some relief that for that night, it is all over.
“Let’s go,” he says after a moment. “The place will be crawling with demons very soon.”
They disappear, leaving behind a dead body in an empty alley.

As soon as they arrive, Ruby pulls away from Castiel and does a little dance of joy.
“I was good, wasn’t I?” she asks, dancing back to him. “I totally sold it.”
She makes a small, surprised sound deep in her throat when he gets hold of her again, and pushes her against the wall, holding her hands above her head. He kisses her ear and neck, and then runs the tip of his tongue right by the line of her cleavage, before going back to her ear.
“You were good,” he says, and he slides one of his hands up her thigh, underneath her dress. Ruby’s breathing becomes quicker; she closes her eyes.
“Yes. Please?” she gasps out, when his fingers brush over her panties. She arches her back, moving against his hand, and moans quietly as he pulls her panties down.
“You are very pretty in this dress,” he says into her ear. His tongue is lazy and deliberate on her neck; Ruby puts her legs apart, inhaling sharply when his fingers move past her clit and slide inside her.
He fucks her like that, pinned up against the wall with her dress barely pulled up, and Ruby embraces him with her leg, moaning louder and louder with each of his thrusts. She comes seconds before him, crying out his name; for a while after they remain holding onto one another, as their breathing slowly returns to normal.

They repeat the exact same stunt a few more times, to much more enjoyment on Ruby’s part than she probably should admit. She kills the demons for all but the last time, when the duke of Hell in question is suspicious and Castiel steps in to send him into oblivion before the demon manages to hurt Ruby. The power he shows is magnificent; it makes the blood of Ruby’s borrowed body simmer in her veins.
She goes down on the angel that evening, with much enthusiasm and devotion. After, when he brings her off with his fingers, she is so loud that he has to put a hand over her mouth to keep her from waking people in the neighbouring rooms.

Neither of them can fall asleep that night. Ruby twists and turns and then, when Castiel thinks she is beginning to drift off, she sits up on the bed and looks at him in the near-darkness.
“What now?” she asks.
Framed by the street lights seeping in through the window, Ruby’s head looks as if surrounded by a very dim halo. It seems oddly appropriate for her; certainly more so than for those of his brothers who decided to hasten the approach of the Apocalypse.
Castiel knows God’s love and believes in God’s mercy; and that there are no paths set in stone, and one’s deeds can alter the soul’s fate, both for better and for worse. He stands firmly by the belief that the end of the world will only come when God wishes it so, and before that, all who work towards the opposite goal are blasphemers and enemies.
“I don’t know yet,” he replies at last. Ruby frowns.
“We can’t go on killing off the big demon fish,” she says. “They will have realised something is wrong by now.”
“It would be too dangerous,” he agrees. Both of them have witnessed more than enough of Hell lately, and he would rather not see her hurt.
“You said that you had a plan, that you wanted to find other angels who don’t want Lucifer freed,” she reminds him.
“It is more complicated than I thought,” Castiel says.
Demons are, by their very nature, a solitary kind. They act for their own benefit, and it is easy to separate one from the herd and lure into a trap. Angels, however, keep together and tend to act upon orders, especially in a time of crisis. If one goes bad, it may be out of its own accord; if there are more, however, there is no telling how far the disease has spread.
He attempts to explain that to Ruby. She nods, impatiently.
“There must be someone whom you can trust whatever,” she says. “Like, those archangels from the Bible. They wouldn’t have gone in if they weren’t poster-children for goodness, would they?”
Her agitation makes Castiel smile a little.
“It could work, but we haven’t seen any of them in many centuries,” he says. “They have… specialized functions, so to say, and they went down to Earth when they were relieved of duty. No, I will have to look among the ordinary angels, like me.”
“You are not ordinary,” Ruby murmurs, lying back again next to him.
Her body is warm and responsive to his touch; she gasps when the palms of his hands move over her breasts, and moans in his ear when he begins to fuck her. She is beautiful in his eyes, and he knows that there is no sin nor offence in what they share, no transgression against God’s will.
She comes with a small sigh, her hands locked on his back, and falls asleep just minutes after, still holding close to Castiel.
