I have distinct memories of being hungry at every wedding I've been to, though. Maybe I just get so caught up in the excitement that I forget to plan ahead for food. :P
Yeah, my answer is the same. If I know there won't be anything, I'd stop in between to get a snack, but even if supper is at six, people won't necessarily get to eat right at six. It has been my experience that there's generally some chitchat and picture taking and so on that delays everyone finding their seats and getting settled, which in turn delays the food being brought out til a good half-hour afterwards. If people haven't had anything to eat since maybe brunch or lunch before getting ready for the wedding and then going, they'll be really hungry. :(
Well, it's a cocktail hour, which to me means drinks (and not food). Also, 6 p.m. isn't late for dinner. Sure, people might get it a bit late, but plenty of people eat between 6 and 7 p.m. anyway. And if you tell them beforehand that there won't be snacks before the dinner (being honest about it, but not embarrassed), then I think it's totally fine.
In a time when people are realizing that weddings are crazy expensive and that most people aren't going to provide you with something to eat at every turn, I think it's OK. :)
