It's not Dean's fault that he can't go watch the fireworks with them. Brooke tells Matthew this repeatedly on their way to the beach, but she knows it doesn't do much to brighten his mood. He's too busy thinking about the firecrackers they bought last month, and the 'show' he had been hoping Dean would put together for them. He's not allowed to help light them yet, he just enjoys watching the explosions. They're 'cool'.
"I know what we'll do. We'll save the firecrackers for when your dad has time. We can have our own Independence Day." She figures Dean and Sam will deserve a celebration if they manage to stop the apocalypse. He had to research tonight, but if things work out for them, if they can deal with Lucifer and the world doesn't become Insta-Hell, then it'll be party time. She'll host whatever the heck they want, and she doesn't care if the Tree Hill Fire Department has to make another special appearance.
"Yeah," Matthew grumbles, holding on to Brooke's hand as they move across the beach. There are a lot of people there already, sitting on blankets and listening to the music that's being blasted over the speakers. Bruce Springsteen, same as always. "Dads aren't supposed to have to work on the Fourth of July."
Brooke isn't immediately sure of what to say to that, in spite of the fact that her instincts are telling her to defend Dean. She'd love to blame him for their son being disappointed - if it wasn't the apocalypse, and six billion people weren't relying on them to get this right. She yells at Dean for all kinds of things, whether it's his fault or not, but he won't be hearing about this from her or from Matthew. She'll make him understand by the time they get home.
"Some dads have to," she notices Peyton up ahead and starts pulling him through the crowd. The explanation can wait until they've snagged the blanket next to Peyton's that her brilliant best friend earned the 'brilliant' setting up. And Haley always got credit for being the smart one. "Happy Fourth of July, P. Sawyer."
"Happy Fourth of July, B. Davis," Peyton returns the greeting, picking Matthew up and giving him a hug. "I'm glad you guys could make it."
"Dad couldn't," Matthew reminds them both, sitting down on their blanket after Peyton has released him. Brooke immediately moves to sit down next to him, kissing his forehead and putting an arm around him. "You have to remember that he's like a soldier, right? He has to protect people and sometimes he has to go away to do that. Sometimes he has to stay home and read a lot. Sometimes he has to fight the bad guys so that everyone can be safe." She pauses, because even on a day like this one, it's hard to give a little boy the slightest idea of what they do without making it seem scary. She wants him to know how brave Dean is, but she doesn't want Matthew to be afraid for him.
"He's very good at all of those things, but having a job that's so important means he has to miss out on stuff sometimes. Your dad is always, always going to be there for you when you need him, but tonight he had to be somewhere else." That's the best she can do, so she picks him up and sits him on her lap, wrapping her arms around him. They should have brought jackets, it's a little cooler on the beach than she was expecting. "We have to be proud of him, he's a real hero. He wanted to be here with us and he gave that up."
"I am proud," he looks up at the sky, growing anxious for the show he will get to see tonight. "It's just...Dad likes blowin' stuff up. Today everyone is allowed to blow stuff up. There's fire and it's loud. I wanted to blow stuff up with dad."
"Do you really think Dean Winchester limits his explosions to holidays?" Brooke laughed. "Let me tell you something, kid. If there's one thing your dad never needs an excuse to do, it's start a fire."
Technically, there are two things Dean never needs an excuse to do, but the second thing is a whole other talk that Dean will be giving him, years from now, after the world doesn't end.
