Cats are so hard because they're bastards about wanting out, and then you feel bad for keeping them in when all they want is freedom, and then when you give them freedom, the black cat across the street kicks their ass every time (I'm really talking about me and my cat Jeff here). Then you (I) vow that you (I) will never let him out again, and then he paces and yowls and I feel like a bastard for insisting that he stay in, where it is boring and they aren't as many bugs or worms or birds to kill, and the only other mammal is a blind, overweight, arthritic, geriatric golden retriever mix who really doesn't care about much except car rides anymore. You're not a bad parent. Eight years is a really long time to take such good care of an animal who will seek her independence regardless of her safety.
