In other words; not only pointless and painful, but probably just make them more hostile and feel the need to punish.

I believe the issue is that no one can manage to get it done. Every turn that is taken to escape is blocked by something else the scientists come up with to bring halt to the attempts.

That is all well and good, hope is something to hold onto, but failure weighs heavy on a person. Exceptionally so if it's a frequent failure. Your confidence though, it begs the question: what do you propose we do, sir?

Failure is a drive to do better, those who cannot deal with it are too weak to be worth the weight of what they desire.
