that's pretty freakin good. the only thing I didn't like was how you used to same analogy twice:
The thought slipped in and out of her heart like a knife. and The sound drove terror deep into her chest like a blade.

I like the analogy itself a lot, but it seems too much to use it twice in such a short span.
