Best (Sex Bo)Bomb of the Summer

Alright, let's get this out of the way right now. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World bombed. It tanked. It was a box office failure. It opened fifth, and took most of its earnings on its opening Friday, indicating a total lack of word-of-mouth buzz. It made $10 million over its first weeekend, earning back a paltry sixth of its budget. It lost out ( Read more... )

Apparently, there was an early draft of the script where Scott does go off with Knives. But in the comics Ramona is a much more well-developed character, who actually participates in the finale, so it makes sense there. And I guess the filmmakers didn't want to diverge so sharply from the source material.

And yes, I also thought he was going to end up with Knives at the end there. On the other hand, the movie's mostly about Scott finally getting his life on track and getting ready to move forwards, to the point that he has no home or band at the end, nothing to tie him to Toronto anymore. It does make more sense for him and Ramona to go 'start over' somewhere else, rather than for him to move backwards in his own development. But yeah, this would be a lot eaiser to take if Ramona weren't such a blatant manic pixie dream girl.

Heh, vegan police. "Chicken's not vegan?"

On the other hand, how unsatisfying would it have been, thematically, for Nails to have Scott back at the end of the movie? And how thoroughly would it undercut the idea of defeating the Evil Exes, if Nails, who is herself an Evil Ex by the end, was actually rewarded for her behaviour? As much as Ramona is something of a non-entity at the climax of the film, I just can't see any way to spin it so that a Nails-Scott pairing could do anything but fatally hamper the overall thrust of the storyline.
