Chapter 2

“Where the hell is the tea boy?” Owen Harper asked for the tenth time. “I thought he was on his way back here.”

Captain Jack Harkness glared at the doctor partly for asking the same question over and over again but mostly for calling Ianto tea boy. Ianto Jones was a hell of a lot more than a mere tea boy. Ianto was the only one who could even begin to understand a small part of who Captain Jack Harkness really was.

That he wasn’t a hero but a man who had made some horrible choices; some out of necessity, and others out of misguidance. He needed someone to hold him, and he needed someone to hold as well, when the dark threaten to over take him some nights.

Sure there had been others before Ianto, and deep inside his heart Jack Harkness knew there would be others after him but he didn’t think any of them would ever be able to hold a candle to his beloved Ianto.

Damn it, here he was eulogizing the man. What was wrong with him? It was time to find Ianto and take him home and show what he meant to him.

He wasn’t a good man with words he believed in actions speaking for him, and even though he couldn’t tell Ianto his depth of feelings for the younger man, he could show him. He wanted to tell Ianto how he felt but there never seemed to be a right time, and a sadistic part of him believed that the minute he did let Ianto know that the universe would take Ianto away from him.

It was only in the dark when he held his Welshman would he even dare think about love and a life together. Perhaps even one that didn’t include Torchwood but then the morning would come and their life once again became one of weevils and the rift throwing the garbage of the galaxy at them.

“Tell you what, Doctor Harper, since you’re so worried about Ianto messing up you next pull, why don’t you go find him. I’m sure Toshiko could give you his last coordinates,” Jack said.

“I’ll even go with you, Owen,” the lovely woman said.

Jack watched the duo head down toward the alley. He should go too but he couldn’t go. He was terrified of what he might see. He always knew that he would lose Ianto to the job but he wasn’t ready for it to be today.

There were too many places he had wanted to go with Ianto. Not just here on earth but he wanted to show Ianto places the younger man could never imagine. He had always thought there were be more time which he knew it was a crock. He had thought that about Kathleen, Estelle, Bishop and Lucia. But somehow the job always came first, and if not his job then his own pleasures.

He had vowed to make things different when he came back from the year that never was but there never seemed to be the time to get to the movies and the only dinner they could get lately was fish and chips from the local pub.

He could feel that Ianto had been slipping away from him since they had tried to save the space whale.  He had tried to talk to Ianto about it but the Welshman would just brush him off and say it was something he was dealing with, alone.

Alone was something he and Ianto had been a lot. Something he had thought they were past. Maybe it was time to do something about that.

Tosh’s rift prediction program seemed to be working well.  Perhaps he could figure out a couple of days where he and Ianto could take off. Spend some time together, get in a proper date, and have a little romance.

There was a crack of static, telling him that someone wanted to talk to him. “Jack? It’s Owen. You need to get over here, right away.”

Jack felt his heart stop. “Why? What’s happened? Did you find him?” he croaked.

“Jack, it’s Tosh. There is no sign of Ianto. We found his cell phone, and there are a few over turned trashcans.” She sounded like she was about to cry any minute.

Jack hated the next question he had to ask. “Any blood?”

“I’ll be right there.” Jack walked one way then the other. His heart and mind both panicking. “Tosh?”

“Yes, Jack? What is it?”

“Where am I going?”

“Behind the Chinese restaurant down the quay. “

Once he knew where he was going Jack wasted no time getting to the last place he had heard those wonderful Welsh vowels.

“Report,” Jack barked.

“There was no rift activity in the area. No sign of weevils either.”

“But there sure looked like a hell of a fight went on,” Owen said from some knocked over cans. He held up a cell phone and a com unit. “Ianto would never leave those behind.”

Jack nodded his agreement. Ianto was very dedicated to his work. Maybe a little too dedicated.

Tosh was waving around her sensor in the area of the cans. “There might not have been any rift activity but something sure went on here,” the beautiful tech said. She held up her device. The readings were off the scale. “But I have no idea what.”

Jack reached over and plucked the device out of her hand.  He ran it all over the alley. It was mostly concentrated in two areas but there was a trail between them.

It took a few minutes but he soon recognized the particles as tachyon. They are only found when time travelling occurred.

“Tachyon particles,” Jack hissed.

“What the hell are those?” Owen asked.

“Residual particles left behind when someone time travels using one of these.” Jack held out his wrist so they could see his vortex manipulator.

“Jack, are you sure?” Tosh asked, before covering up her mouth with her hand. Not wanting to say what it was that they were all thinking.

“That he’s gone? I think we all know that someone came and took him. Someone travelled here in time and took him from me.”

“Who?” Tosh asked. “Captain John Hart?”

“And how do we get him back?” Owen asked.

“I don’t know but I may have an idea how.”

Jack started toward the SUV. He turned around when he didn’t hear any footsteps coming with him.

“What the hell are you two waiting for?” Jack asked, without turning around.

“Are you sure Ianto didn’t go willingly?” Owen said.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Well, maybe your friend the Doctor appeared and he took off just to spite you,” Owen suggested.

“Or another of your old friends like John Hart,” Tosh offered, staring down Owen.

“If it was Hart, he would have left some calling card for me to find so he could torture me. And there’s no way Ianto would just up and leave, he could be pissed off as hell at me but he would never turn his back on Torchwood, or the rest of you,” Jack said.

Owen shook his head. “I don’t know about that last part, if you had seen how angry Ianto was when we figured you had gone off with the Doctor. He was ready to leave then.”

Jack couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Ianto had never mentioned he had any thoughts of leaving.

“There is no way Ianto would have been able to stay away, and he couldn’t have been retconned. It doesn’t work on him.”

“How do you know that?” Owen asked.

“When he was with Torchwood One they tested him. Apparently, it was standard operating procedure. Gotta love, Yvonne Hartman,” Jack sneered. “We have to get back to the hub. I need to call a friend.”

He prayed that Martha was going to be able to get a hold of the doctor for him.
