Last summer my aunt requested the military file for my grandfather.  It finally came through last month.  I scanned all 600+ pages a couple weeks ago and am now going through it.  It's mostly pretty boring. Lots of medical reports and service evaluations ( Read more... )

Reading further there's something interesting. Grandpa Weiss also served on the U.S.S. Brooks, which patrolled the Pacific from Alaska to Seattle. His service on the Brooks began in January 1940. What's interesting in the file is that his original orders were for him to report to the Brooks to be its Executive Officer, or second in command. However, shortly after he reported for duty but before his assumed the role, those orders were cancelled. Instead he served on the Brooks in another role.

Why were his orders cancelled?
