It seems that in getting cat 5 cable to my office downstairs, I've made every mistake that could possibly have been done. Fortunately for me I also made the mistakes of not budgeting or measuring very well so I still have about 600 feet of cable. That's enough to re-do the entire project at least 5 times. Well, getting the cat 5 off of the power bundle seems to have been the trick to get a solid connection to the basement but unfortunately, my ability to make linux network properly through the hub and then the router are a different matter.

That was the issue with the hub and the laptop yesterday? The XBox is just better at handling the errors?

No, the hub is before the power conduit. I don't have an explaination for what was going on. I has to be something that I did with the network settings on the laptop ethernet card. The wi-fi card works fine (bypasses the hub) but the ethernet card just doesn't seem to want to work. I don't think it has anything to do with the hub.

My desktop machine was loosing about 20% of the packets with the cabling running through the power conduit. With the cabling moved away from the interference I'm back to my usual 3MiB (awesome) download pipe even with 2 hubs between me and the router. :)
