Far Beyond the Morning Stars

What's this about? Ben Sisko: husband, father, Marine. When the first is no longer true he quickly realizes the last can't be either, and convinces his superiors he can best serve his country by retiring. Moving with his son Jake to a tiny landlocked town far from any military base, he vows to make their lives from now on as normal as possible.

But between the angels that save their lives before they've even moved into their new house, the cryptic destinies they keep insisting Ben and Jake have, and the bizarre assortment of non-human beings showing up in this little town, it's quickly becoming clear that "normal" isn't exactly on the menu anymore...

No, seriously, what? Think DS9 characters in a Supernatural setting, with certain alien species becoming certain non-human species, certain DS9 characters taking on roles familiar to long-time Supernatural viewers, and some DS9 plotlines getting brought in too. And who knows, maybe some Supernatural characters will show up along the way.

And you've got this post on livejournal because...? Because AO3's series pages are really frustrating to use if you're not writing everything in the order you intend it to be read - and almost everything I've written so far is out of chronological order. Once I get most of the early stuff written, I might start an AO3 series, but for now you're stuck with this.

So what order are we supposed to read this in?Well, that's a little complicated. If you're just looking for chronological order:

[Chronological Order]The Rapture (~400 words; Kira, "The Rapture" AU'd)
Nerys consents readily. That doesn't mean she knows what she's getting into.

Balancing Act (~2100 words; B. Sisko & J. Dax)
"You know, it's the damnedest thing," Ben says, adding a couple chips to the pot. "The way you play reminds me of a friend of mine, this grizzled old Marine who trained me when I was a new recruit. Went by the name of - "

"Curzon Dax," the woman says with a knowing grin. She sees his bet, raises it to five chips. Same kind of overconfident move Curzon would've used. "I was wondering what you would recognize about me, Benjamin, but somehow my poker playing technique never came to mind."

Introductions (~700 words; B. Sisko & J. Dax)
"About two-thirds of the council are in the know," Jadzia explained, "and when situations involving 'this' come up, like you, separate meetings are held off the record to discuss them."

"That doesn't sound legal."

Telling Tales (~2000 words; B. Sisko & command staff)
The first Councilmen Social Night doesn't get a large turnout, but Ben learns interesting things about a few of his new coworkers.

...
...

The Chip (~500 words; Bashir & Odo, "The Wire" AU'd)
"And just where do you think you're going?"

The Cure (~1200 words; Bashir & Garak, "The Wire" AU'd)
"You have two options," the doctor said. "Well, three, but I don't approve of the third option and will probably ask you to reconsider if you choose it."

...
...

Distracting (~600 words; J. Sisko & Nog)
"What if... what if my uncle's right, and I'm never able to stop counting things? There's no way I can get into the Navy like that, let alone the Marines! I'll be stuck working at that stupid bar the rest of my life."

...
...

in sæcula sæculorum (~1300 words; B. Sisko & the Prophets, "In The Beginning" AU'd)
"The Sisko understands," said the thing wearing Kira's body that called itself an angel. "It has always been the Sisko."

...

Tribble-Free Living (~800 words; B. Sisko & command staff, "Trials and Tribble-ations" AU'd)
Waiting for Arne Darvin to show up, the temporally displaced councilmen get bored.

...
...

Mostly Holes (~900 words; Quark & Bashir, "Profit and Lace" AU'd)
Careful what you wish for when you ask favors of the Unseelie Court...

Complications (~1800 words; B. Sisko, J. Dax & Bashir)
When Jadzia suffers a dizzy spell at work, Ben insists that she see Dr. Bashir immediately. Luckily, the news is more good than bad, though there's a catch.

Unjoined (~900 words; J. Dax & E. Dax)
Jadzia wakes up, Dax-less, with a visitor.

...

Talk It Out (~600 words; Kira & E. Dax)
A recording of Nerys' first session with Dr. Dax.

If you're looking for categories, they break down like this:

Expository Stories (Exposistories?)
More or less infodumping stories, once that set up this alternate universe and establish a status quo of sorts. (Some of these involve explaining Supernatural elements, while some are explaining elements entirely my own design.)

[Exposistories!]Balancing Act (~2100 words; B. Sisko & J. Dax)
"You know, it's the damnedest thing," Ben says, adding a couple chips to the pot. "The way you play reminds me of a friend of mine, this grizzled old Marine who trained me when I was a new recruit. Went by the name of - "

Episode Equivalents
These are pretty straight adaptations of DS9 episodes to this setting. (Or, once in awhile, an adaptation of a Supernatural episode to the characters.) So far we've got pieces of "The Wire", "Trials and Tribble-ations", and "Profit and Lace"... as well as "The Rapture" and "In the Beginning" from Supernatural. More are sure to come!

Stories that are about things not specific to a particular episode, or that simply did not happen in either DS9 or Supernatural. Usually stuff that's going to be built up over multiple stories. Arcs have their own little sub-subsection under here.
