just as good at Ennis' voice - trying to be small, waiting to be punished, and so happily surprised to be wanted - can see his moonlight smile

love that last line, and the fateful decision not to look ahead

thank you - and more, please!

Thank you for saying that. I don't really feel as if I 'get' Ennis as well as I like to think I understand Jack. However, the passage in Brokeback Mountain where Annie Proulx wrote of how Ennis felt riding back up to camp has always resonated with me. I do feel as if I know how he felt at that moment, able to "paw the white out a the moon", as she writes it.

i have never quite got "paw the white out of the moon"; i am not sure just what the feeling is. can you elaborate? i love your writing. it sounds very fresh and new to me, can't put my finger on it. it makes me curious about you. i feel more like an ennis person, and you seem to nail him for me. oops that sounds funny...i mean in a good way...

I have always thought that Ennis felt 'ten feet tall' as the saying goes. After a lifetime of keeping his head down, he met someone that respected him as an equal and that must have been a heady experience, almost intoxicating. I do hope this explains a bit how I interpret the phrase.

God this was beautiful, I think you hit on why Ennis really ultimately feel for Jack. They were friends, first and this was something he had never experienced in his past, and filled him up as you say, in such a new way for him. Really very poignant.

Cheers, Ted

"He knew what they thought. They thought he was trash, like you saw in ditches on the side of the road."

*shudder*

I liked that brief moment in the story, too, and love the way you've expanded on it.
