Sometimes It Goes the Other Way

Alma got Ennis off alone first chance she got, pulling him into the storeroom for a meeting of the minds.  Told him she’d seen what she’d seen and couldn’t never unsee it and he mumbled that she was crazy, but his voice lacked conviction and wasn’t long before he caved, turned his back and tried to walk away from it.  “Where ya goin’, Ennis?” ( Read more... )

You have such a gift for keeping the feel of the original story in something that is so unique. Can't wait for you to update this again.

Not much I can ad to mobody's statement. It is true: to tell about a break-up and a cancelled wedding so distant and yet so getting all the pain behind it, that is very canon and very close to the os.

To be compared to the original story is a very very great compliment. Thank you so very much.

wow, so much with so few words, i love that. the essence of things, like perfume, top notes that say one thing and pierce the mind, base notes lasting much longer in the heart. the juice that you mix is magic. there's a levity to your descriptions -- how bumblees stay in the air -- so wonderful, yet so real, like smelling something from my past,,, cut grass or rain soaked cement or something.

the story is intriguing too, especially now since the wedding is off (!)... i can't help but think they left the silver bubble behind! aint that truck got a hitch? :D i've a mind to drive back and steal it for them! ;)

Hello, Friend. Your words about the evocative power of smells are pure poetry of themselves, and such a marvelous compliment, particularly from one I admire for the 'saltiness' of your work, the 'rawness' I associate with men of rural occupations.

You bring up a sad subject for me as well. I very much wanted Jack and Ennis to leave Riverton with the Bubble and I think Mr. Beers offered it to them, but you know how proud Ennis is, and how unlikely it would be for him to accept such a gift from his ex-fiancee's father. I would have liked to warp the tale around this little anomaly, but it would not bend.

hi, thanks, your writing is inspiring!

i know what you mean about bending. i so wanted to include cats in my last fic about animals but couldn't slip it in. how ennis feels makes perfect sense, and driving away with that behind them, we couldn't see the couple, small as children. i just love airstreams is all.. ^_^

I understand your love of Airstreams all too well, the original Silver Bullet evokes a wealth of associations for me. Isn't it rather telling, though, how quickly I leapt to my own defence? It would seem I am a bit sensitive about this story, to my chagrin. I had not realized how much I had invested in it, but I suppose I should have, considering the subject matter. I had thought I was come to years of discretion, but Brokeback Mountain inspires such a passion in me that I find it hard to be completely rational about it.

Isn't it bizarre, and yet magical, how characters take on a life of their own and will not perform actions contrary to their natures? Writing is such a creative process, and yet bounded by so many self-imposed rules.

I must say that I very much enjoy our exchanges.
