Sometimes It Goes the Other Way

There were no flies on Lureen Newsome, and she had never heard of the word no.  Her daddy let it ride, sly cuss, figuring the new would wear off Jack Twist soon enough and his baby girl would pick out a stud with better breeding to sire his grandkids.  Too canny to talk her cowboy down, L.D. played it broad, called Jack ‘Rodeo’ like naming a pet, ( Read more... )

This rings so true, I can see Ennis acting like that. It is very often assumed if they stayed to gether after the mountain they would stick together. But they had a lot to contend with. Love the expression 'left handed gift'
even tho' I am left handed!

Oh, Ennis! What is wrong with you? Don't you see that Jack will think you're abandoning him and now he will have to marry Lureen because he thinks you don't love him at all. You are a fool, Ennis del Mar!

Oh, this is driving me mad. If you want to get to my emotions here, you're doing such a great job. ; )
I really like this story. And I'm off to read the next chapter to see if things look up for our boys. : )

Hi, just found your story, read the first seven chapters back to back and am so impressed. Like so many others, I feel you have captured AP's style really well - you have that compactness, that reduced-but-enriched quality of really good stock, that all the best poets need. I was particularly struck by your swift glimpse into LD's head: 'too canny to talk her cowboy down' and naming Jack Rodeo 'like a pet'. Whoa. That's some specialised characterisation right there. And Jack's spot-on assessment of what his future with Lureen would be - all the rodeo metaphors are just right - Jack as the belt-buckle that needs a sight more polish. Fantastic.

And then there's Ennis. Trying to do the right thing. No idea of what Jack really wants. Sigh.

This is just SO good.
