Sometimes It Goes the Other Way: Part Fourteen

A serialized tribute to Brokeback Mountain, the book and the Oscar-worthy film.

The sun rose like it always did, out of habit and never late, beaming into the bedroom, waking them at dawn every day because Jack could never remember to close the curtains at night.  Jack liked the way the light ( Read more... )

Such a wonderfully happy ending, yet at the same time I'm crying. I guess it always makes me a tiny bit sad when one chooses to follow the other sooner than later. Mostly tears of joy though. All those years together like it should've been.

The tussle on the kitchen table was delightful.

This sentence is absolute perfection:
"In many ways, Jack and Ennis never came down from that mountain and spent the rest of their days recapturing the feelings that were first detonated there."
I love the whole sentence (and chapter (and story)), but especially "detonated."

I don't know if I've ever complimented the spareness of the language. I don't think I've complimented the flawless rhythm. Being the last chapter, I wanted to make sure I do.

“Gonna get cold tonight for sure,” he said, as the sun set for the last time.

Beautiful. Thank you.

"...and neither the passing of time or the repetition of the act could dull its wild and vulgar splendor..."
That's precisely how it would have been for Jack and Ennis. Intense and passionate always. Your story has allowed them to have it.

Thank you so much for writing. Helps us all to remember to believe in possibility.

I love yellow, and your use of it to show how, with Ennis, Jack finds the world a welcoming place and, with Jack, Ennis finds his way home, was wonderful

also love that they found other exiles and stayed sweet to each other and yay for vulgar splendor

Jack's last breath, and Ennis last walk into the mountains, each devoted to each other... gorgeous.

Thanks so much!

Ellen

Well, I don't think I can do this justice with a comment, but I'll try. I think for me this fic( it seems trivial to call it that),captures the essence of the OS so completely, Annie could have written it. Jack's death made me cry, and I think the life you made for them is perfect; if they'd lived together that would have been the life they had, I'm sure. Beautifully crafted, and just perfect,
Thanks,
Kate
