As always, the evening banquet was filled with pomp and circumstance and excess. The courtiers gathered in the grand banquet hall, with its black and white marble floors and walls ornamented with niches and decorated with arabesques of different colored stones. Everywhere one looked, wine flowed freely and trays of food were piled high in a show of decadence. Serving boys and girls wandered between the divans and low tables where the royals and other wealthy courtiers sat, limbs sprawled indolently as they dined.
