The shooting in Chapel Hill today has made me very sad.

And it's making me rethink this criminal defense thing.

Today, I had to defend someone in sentencing. The judge, Judge Foote, chewed her out for her SIXTH DUII. And today, it was just clicking a little differently in my head. Today, it felt dirty ( Read more... )

While I usually feel this way, and especially after a senseless thing like that shooting, I also incredibly respect the purpose for criminal defense lawyers when I think about the number of people who have been accused of crimes they didn't commit. Especially in places where the legal system is different. It's a lot like teaching, actually, when it comes down to it--usually I feel okay about my job if I can have a couple really strong lessons that I think are important and get the students thinking per unit. That makes me okay with all the days I have to do ridiculous test-driven things. I'd bet it will be the same for you--if you can take a case you really believe in every so often, it will make the other cases worth it maybe?

I'm still at that stage where I feel like, if I know everything public about the case, I'll somehow make sense of it. Which I know I won't, but I keep on, anyway.
