A lot of Christopher Brookmyre ones take place in Glasgow - especially The Sacred Art of Stealing (as I recall). There's Iain Banks Espedair Street as well.

Might want to check this: http://www.westendfestival.co.uk/ out. Runs in Glasgow's West End in June. Huge street parades/bands/acts/etc. Very enjoyable.

Islands on the west coast are extremely nice. Think of looking into Isle of Mull, Iona, Arran...possibly go on walks? The weather varies in different areas - west coast tends to be more damp and warm, east is more crisp and bright. North can have the tendency to be overcast though don't treat it as an oversight! Isle of Lewis is lovely, as is Harris. Plenty of A* beaches in Scotland. Lots of lovely coastal walks. Cities are great though obviously have their limitations. The rural outdoors is where it's at. Perhaps check out http://www.thearches.co.uk - arts venue buried under the main scottish railway station. Also there is the GFT cinema in Glasgow which shows cultural films - may differ from normal cinema - if you're from outside of Europe. Edinburgh more touristy. Dundee working combination of students/working class....lovely and sunny a great proportion of the time - St Andrews ( ... )

'The Cutting Room' by Louise Welsh is maybe the sort of thing you're looking for. It got rave reviews and was a bestseller. It's a bit violent, but if you're into Crime then you might enjoy it. It has Glaswegian dialogue at parts as well so you'll be getting fully immersed. :)

Alasdair Grey's 'Lanark' is the consummate Glaswegian novel, often likened to Ulysses, but it's probably a bit abstract and heavy going for what your looking for. Worth having a look for it in some of the great bookshops in the West End when you get here though.
