I was trying to find a video of Derek and the Domino original release of Layla. Pure Clapton voice and guitar. Before he became a pop whore. The original sounds like an assault on the senses and ends with the band howling in frustration. You can tell he was hot after this woman, the song just throbs with it. The later Viagra versions are mostly ok. Poor Layla(Patti Boyd, Harrison Clapton) had very bad luck with men. Both her husbands turned out to be cheating bastards. Still if someone wrote Layla about me, I would have run off with them too ;)
That video clip is from a concert for MS I think. But what a line up. At least two Stones members, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page I forget the rest. Even then Clapton needed help with the tricky parts of that song. Coke and music don't necessarily make for a good musician. There was a time when I would have loved to be Clapton's guitar ;) What hands :P
