I "tried" to quit many times before I actually did. I joined a "5 Day Plan to Quit Smoking" which turned the tide. It was a free program sponsored by Seventh Day Adventists; they didn't push the religious agenda, just offered good advice and a support system. Drink lots of water, avoid foods and situations that you associate with smoking - not permanently, just for the duration of weaning process, get more exercise and, most importantly, don't futurize about how hard life will be without cigarettes. Rather, look at each urge and tell yourself that you choose not to smoke this cigarette. It's all in the moment. Not smoking one cigarette leads to not smoking the next one, and so on.
