< Act 1-4 >
[In the burnt remains of Poliasha, Labyrinthia sends off a carrier pigeon.]
Labyrinthia: Godspeed to you...
[Clarissa and Felius walk up to her and she turns around to look at them.]
Labyrinthia: Oh, Clarissa... I just sent off a carrier pigeon.
Clarissa: Is something wrong?
Labyrinthia: Nah, with that pigeon's wings, it'll reach the mansion in no time.
Clarissa: ...
Labyrinthia: Is that not what you meant?
Clarissa: Not really, no...
Labyrinthia: The recipient of that pigeon's message is the son of the Captain of the Royal Knights, and the scion of House Brenton.
Labyrinthia: And knowing my Levin, there's no way he'll take an injustice like this sitting down.
Labyrinthia: He's a good kid.
Felius: And you think we can trust him?
Labyrinthia: Of course we can! We was one of my pupils, just like Her Highness the princess.
[She puts her hands on her hips and puffs her chest out.]
Labyrinthia: Ahem!
Clarissa: Well...I guess if you're that confident about someone other than yourself, he should be fine, but still...
Labyrinthia: I don't want to risk anyone's lives saving the villagers.
Labyrinthia: But in order to peaceably resolve a conflict with a lawless band of thugs like the Martial Guard, we'll need an even greater power.
Labyrinthia: So I consider it safest for all concerned to have the Royal Knights take action.
Clarissa: I see... I guess that's the only chance we have...
[The screen switches to the world map.]
=Tutorial: About Free Battles=
* You can engage in "free battles" by entering battlefields that do not have a (red !) icon.
* Free battles are primarily useful for earning CSP to increase your party members' class levels (CLV).
* If you find yourself stuck at a certain story-related battle, try fighting some free battles to strengthen your characters and then try again.
[A road to Bandit's Forest opens, then leads to Promise Hill with a (yellow !) icon. The road between Poliasha and Windhalt Gatehouse is cut off.]
-Poliasha-
(Shop)
Jim the Drunk: The old geezer who ran this place got carted off to jail. I may not have much experience with this, but I can sell just as well as he can! I'll show you!
Jim the Drunk (Talk): Wow, I wonder if I'll get to run this place if old man Brown doesn't come back...
(Synth. Shop)
Alejandro: The Martial Guard people came in here, too. I wound up hiding inside the machine in the back.
They didn't find me, thank heavens, but it was so hot in there, I thought for sure I was done for...
(Inn)
Escaped Villager: ...They all got taken away...
Creedmore Prison is inside an old fortress they built on the promontory to the west, but now it's a base for the Guard...
(Plaza)
Hiding Villager: How...how could they get away with something so horrible?!
Hiding Villager: They try to force higher taxes on us, and when we complain, this happens! We're citizens of the kingdom of Elesius, for heaven's sake!
--
Husky Mercenary: I just came into town this morning, but man, what a scene this is... Your Martial Guard at work, huh?
Incidents like this have been goin' on all over the kingdom for the past six months.
With the king too ill to rule, they're trying to keep the peace with an iron fist and a rabble of Drifters.
The Martial Guard was established ostensibly to keep needless strife from tearing apart the land...
But they're the ones causing most of the strife. What could the kingdom possibly be thinking, stoking the flames of conflict on purpose like this?
-Promise Hill-
Felius: Did you get a reply?
Labyrinthia: I did indeed. Let's take a look...
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: ...
[She frowns.]
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: ...
Felius: Looks like bad news.
Clarissa: What? You can tell?!
Labyrinthia: Apparently the raid on Poliasha was an official order from the Council of Elder Statesmen. And it gets worse...
Labyrinthia: The people of Poliasha are to be publicly executed for inciting civil unrest...
Felius: So they're planning to make an example out of them after all.
Clarissa: What about Levin? Isn't there anything he can do?!
Labyrinthia: Apparently Levin wasn't able to mobilize the Royal Knights.
Labyrinthia: But at the end of the letter, he wrote "I promise I'll do something!" And he enclosed a key for the rear entrance of the prison.
[A cut-in shows an ornate gold key.]
Clarissa: ...
Felius: ...
Clarissa: He couldn't mobilize the Royal Knights, but at least he hasn't given up...
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: ...Yeah, Levin is like that...
[We go back to the world map and a road opens to Creedmore Prison, marked with a (red !).]
-Creedmore Prison: Rear Entrance-
[The sound of keys jingling and a door opening is heard, and the group enters a room.]
Labyrinthia: Well, it looks like we were able to get into the prison without incident...
Clarissa: So that key was real after all...
Labyrinthia: This prison was originally a fort built to defend Elesius against foreign invasion.
Labyrinthia: Most of the military installations in the kingdom are managed by Levin's family, House Brenton.
Labyrinthia: They are the family that leads the Royal Knights, after all.
Labyrinthia: Hmm...
Labyrinthia: We're right on time, and this is where Levin had arranged to meet us...
Felius: Someone's coming.
Tony: Grrrr...
Clarissa: Quick, hide! That's no friend of ours!
[They hide and a female Emulator walks in.]
Martial Guardsman: Some moron's running around out there! You can hear the compling of his boots from a mile away!
[She leaves and the group comes out of hiding.]
Clarissa: "Out there"...?
Labyrintia: That must be Levin...
Felius: He's probably trying to create a diversion, but it's much too dangerous...
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: Let's rescue the people of Poliasha as fast as we can. Accomplishing our objective and withdrawing quickly is the best way to get Levin out of danger.
Clarissa: Right!
[On the Tactical Map, Clarissa, Felius and Labyrinthia walk onto a field with numerous wooden shacks. Two female Excavators patrol at the bottom and at the top of the map.]
Clarissa: So they've got the villagers inside these?
Labyrinthia: I'd imagine they've divided the villagers among each of the buildings. We'll need to save them all...
It looks like the doors have just been barred shut, so all we have to do is remove the bars to free them.
Felius: If the guards discover us, the villagers' lives would be in danger. I'd prefer to carry this out undetected...
Labyrinthia: Once we get them out, we can have them regroup in the storeroom we passed on the way here.
=D.E.R.=
Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be working on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line looks like this. It looks like they've posted a couple of patrol guards...
Labyrinthia: Our mission is to rescue all of the captured villagers.
To break them out, we'll need to go up to each door and execute the "Wait" command to open it.
If any of us are caught in the guard's line of sight, that'll be the end of the game right there. We'll have to be very careful.
To sum up: open all the doors, and keep yourselves hidden from the guards.
Labyrinthia: The guards can see everything in a straight line from them that's not blocked by some obstacle.
If you end your turn within a line of sight, you'll be discovered. Make sure you're always in a blind spot before finishing things up.
Labyrinthia: The guards will move whenever their turn comes up, and that'll change their line of sight. You'll want classes high in RFX and MOV for this job.
[The battle starts.]
=Tutorial: About the Free Cursor=
* Press the (circle) button when the battle menu is open to enter Free Cursor Mode.
* In this mode, you are free to move the cursor around the Tactical Map.
* Place the cursor on top of a unit to display its status and parameters.
* Press the (X) button to view more details on the selected unit. Use this to get a bead on the enemies' locations and abilities.
Brown: You'd better be careful. The warden of this prison is one dangerous woman.
Krelia: Thank you so much. I don't know how to repay you...
Fellman: You have my eternal gratitude!
Alison: I sure hope they don't find us...
McCullum: Curse those bastards! Holing us up in there!
Weyland: Are we gonna make it out?
Jonah: Finally, some fresh air...
Ellen: You...you came to help us...?
Brandon: I'm sorry we caused all this trouble for you.
[If you're spotted...]
Grinne/Maron: Intruder! We've got an intruder!!
Felius: ...!
Labyrinthia: Whoops... Looks like our cover's blown.
Clarissa: Agh... He found me!
[The battle ends once all nine villagers are freed.]
-Creedmore Prison: Storeroom-
Clarissa: Everyone, please stay calm! All that's left now is to get out of here.
Clarissa: How do things look outside, Felius?
Felius: It's clear. They don't seem to have realized what's going on yet. We should be able to get out before they do.
Brandon: Are we really going to be safe?
Fellman: The Martial Guard is still out there...
Labyrinthia: Don't worry. We'll see you safely back to Poliasha.
Labyrinthia: Remaining here is far more dangerous.
Brandon: ...
Fellman: ...
Innkeeper Ellen: What's wrong with y'all?! Show some backbone!
Innkeeper Ellen: Poliasha is our home.
Innkeeper Ellen: How can you be afraid to return to your own home?!
Brandon: Yeah, she's right... Let's do it! Let's go back to Poliasha!
Fellman: Yeah!
[On the Tactical Map, the group and the villagers stand outside.]
Clarissa: Look, the front gate's open! ...Who's that next to the gate?
Reckless Boy: Hey!! I opened the gate for you! Hurry up and get out of here!
Labyrinthia: Levin!!
Levin: ...Sorry, Ms. Wordsworth! I had a plan, but it got kind of screwed up. I knew it I could count on you to pull through, though!
Labyrinthia: And what if we hadn't?!
Levin: You can yell at me later! Just hurry up and--
[A female Secutor and a Fantastica drop in between them.]
Prison Warden Nanasato: And quietly march back to your cells, I presume?
[Two Excavators and two more Fantasticas come in from behind everyone, and then we switch to the portraits.]
Clarissa: Oh no, an ambush...!
Labyrinthia: Don't worry, I anticipated this.
Prison Warden Nanasato: Ready to admit defeat?
Labyrinthia: I don't recall ever losing to you!
And furthermore, we would never surrender!
Prison Warden Nanasato: Enough of this folly!
Labyrinthia: People of Poliasha, run for the gates now! We'll cover you, so ignore the guards and make haste!
Brandon: Wha...?
Fellman: ...Us?
Clarissa: What's the matter?! Run for it!
Levin: What are you doing? You'll be free as soon as you're out of here!
Brandon: That may be true, but... They have weapons!
Fellman: My legs are shaking too hard. I can't run!
Prison Warden Nanasato: Heh heh heh... That's how it goes.
Clarissa: ...
Prison Warden Nanasato: Not everyone can pull it together at times like these.
Prison Warden Nanasato: Most people whine and complain about the world from the comfort of their own homes, but when it comes time to do something about it, they can't even run with their own two feet.
Labyrinthia: ...
Prison Warden Nanasato: Hah hah hah! Take a good look at the cowards you came here to protect! Still think they're worth saving?
Clarissa: .........
Clarissa: ......
Clarissa: ...
Clarissa: We will protect them no matter what!
[An artwork comes up of Clarissa removing her hat, arms outstretched, revealing her long hair.]
Clarissa: Proud people of Elesius! Do not flinch away from your dreams!
Felius: --?!
Labyrinthia: --!!
Clarissa: You must defy the opposing winds and race headlong for the gate!
Levin: Is that...the princess...?
Clarissa: Heed the command of Alexia, Princess Royal of the Kingdom of Elesius!
Clarissa: Rise to your feet! Gather your dreams and run! The very future of our nation awaits on the other side of that gate!
Prison Warden Nanasato: That's...that's absurd! I thought Princess Alexia died in that accident last year!
Brandon: P...Princess Alexia...?
Fellman: ...?
Innkeeper Ellen: ...!
Innkeeper Ellen: Look everyone, it's the princess! She's returned to us, alive and well! We can't let her down like this!
Brandon: Y...yeah! We've endured a lot these past six months, but it's time to stand up and start moving forward!
Fellman: Run, everyone! RUN!
Clarissa: We shall be the shield that protects you! Race towards the gate, and never turn away from your goal!
=D.E.R.=
Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be fighting on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line looks like this.
Labyrinthia: Our mission here is to get all the villagers safely to the front gate. They'll all be heading toward the gate, and we have to protect them along the way.
Labyrinthia: We'll need to concentrate less on defeating the enemy and more on keeping the villagers alive. Don't forget to heal them as necessary.
Labyrinthia: As for the enemy by the prison gate... Well, let's rely on Levin to deal with her. He'll have to secure our escape route for us.
Prison Warden Nanasato: I have an execution order direct from the Council for every villager in Poliasha! Strike them down where they stand!
[The battle ends when either the villagers make it outside or if Nanasato is defeated. The group stands outside.]
Felius: It doesn't look like anyone's following us...
Labyrinthia: Back in the prison storeroom, Tony found a bunch of powder kegs. I made some...slight modifications.
Labyrinthia: I expect the Martial Guard is rather occupied with trying to maintan the fire right about now.
Tony: ...
Labyrinthia: Tony loves fireworks. Especially big ones.
Felius: I wouldn't want to get on your "stalwart companion's" bad side...
Labyrinthia: All that matters is that the rescue was a success! Mostly due to Clarissa's quick thinking.
Labyrinthia: Speaking of which, I'm going to go throw Clarissa a life preserver. Looks like she's in trouble over there...
Brandon: Your Highness! Can we really return to our village?
Fellman: It's such an unbelievable honor to be rescued by you personally, Your Highness!
Clarissa: Uh, yes, of course...
Labyrinthia: Come now, gentlemen. We must keep moving and stay alert. Poliasha is just a short ways ahead, so let's all stay on our toes until we're home safely!
Labyrinthia: And Your Highness, might I possibly have a word with you...?
Clarissa: Oh, uh, certainly...
[The two women leave in the opposite direction and go to Levin, who looks surprised, holding a hand to his heart.]
Levin: Your Highness. It's such a relief, and such a great honor to--
Labyrinthia: Um, ah... Levin, could you be a dear and go tend to the wounded over there?
Levin: ...
[Levin crosses his arms behind his head.]
Levin: Hmph... If you say so, teach.
Levin: We'll talk later, all right, Your Highness?
Clarissa: Sure. And thanks for your help today...
Levin: Heh heh! Wow, to hear Princess Alexia thank me like that... I feel like I have the strength to do anything!
[Levin runs off, leaving the two alone. Labyrinthia walks forward until Clarissa is left alone, and she hangs her head, eyes closed.]
Clarissa: ...
[The screen fades to black.]
[NARRATIVE (Clarissa)]: I hate lies...
And today, I told a huge one...
[The player is prompted to save.]
