< Act 2-12 >
[On the world map, a link from Twilight Valley forms to Circle Valley, marked with a red !.]
-Through the Wilderness-
[A cut-in shows a coach led by horses. Inside is Edna, smirking to herself.]
Edna: Heh. I've still got the trump card, that's for sure.
Edna: I'll let that fool Charlton deal with all of the current troubles, and then when he falters at a critical moment...
Edna: ...
Edna: Control of Elesius is finally within my grasp! I just need to hold onto my card for a little while longer...
[A flashback to the cell under the Sundome Abbey. The girl is now standing behind the bars, directly facing Edna.]
Blonde-Haired Girl: ...
Blonde-Haired Girl: Chevalet Blanc, you say?
Edna: Mmm-hmm. It's an army lead by an imposter who's using the dead princess's name to incite civil unrest.
Edna: They've sure got Charlton and Eisen quaking in their boots. I can barely stand to hear them talk about it anymore!
Blonde-Haired Girl: ...
Edna: So... Why don't you tell me what you think? Surely this news has affected you...especially deeply?
Blonde-Haired Girl: ...
Blonde-Haired Girl: The Council has usurped the throne, and is tormenting the people of Elesius...
Blonde-Haired Girl: The girl who leads that group... She sounds to me exactly like the Princess Royal of Elesius, Alexia herself!
Blonde-Haired Girl: I don't see her as an imposter. I see her as the examplar of hope that Elesius so desperately needs right now. Indeed, I could not be more proud!
Edna: --?!
Edna: Look at you! Locked up in a cage, yet still preaching from your pulpit!
[Edna tries to stab her with a knife, but the girl chops at her hand and disarms her.]
Edna: Argh!
Blonde-Haired Girl: I thought cold-hearted guile was your weapon of choice?
Blonde-Haired Girl: You pulled your hidden dagger just because I refused to say the things you wanted to hear? Don't you know that I could have been seriously hurt?
Edna: Grrrrr... You...you little...!
Blonde-Haired Girl: You said I was your "trump card". What would be the point of hurting me?
Blonde-Haired Girl: You should be thanking me! And yet I don't think anyone has ever looked at me with such hateful eyes before.
Edna: You... The one and only reason you aren't dead and buried is ME!
Edna: Whether I let you live, or kill you now, or keep you as my trump card... You live or die at my whim!
Edna: Never forget that! As long as you're in my possession, you're nothing more than a card for me to play!
[Back to the present, Edna gnashes her teeth.]
Edna: Mocking me with her little speeches...
Edna: That little chit. If she wasn't my trump card, I'd wring her neck until her eyes popped out...
[The horses whinny and the coach stops.]
Edna: Why are you stopping the carriage?! I told you to hurry back to the capital!
Coachman: Re...Reverend Mother... It's a rebel ambush!
Edna: What?!
[An illustration shows Edna leaning out the door of the coach to see the party standing battle-ready in front of the carriage.]
Edna: --Alexia?!
Edna: ...
Edna: No... This must be Chevalet Blanc?!
Levin: You're that froggy old hag from the Council of Elder Statesmen! What are you doing here?!
Clarissa: The Council... These people work for them too...?!
Edna: Heh. I was just fantasizing about throttling the life out of someone who looks just like you do. This won't be quite as satisfying, but it'll do!
=D.E.R.=
Clarissa: ...
Clarissa: ...
Clarissa: ...
[The battle ends when all the enemies have been defeated. Edna gawks at the scene after her goons have all failed.]
Edna: This was supposed to be a war of numbers... How can this paltry bunch be causing us so much misery?!
Felius: You've fought and lost. I would advise you not to resist any further.
[Edna brings her hands together and cries.]
Edna: Don't hurt me... Please, I need your help...!
I...I'm a victim too! Yes, that's right... I'm a helpless noblewoman, facing constant torment from the kingdom of Elesius!
Raganr: What, when things go wrong you pretend to be a victim? You beg to be rescued and claim that you're helpless?!
Raganr: Let me tell you something, stateswoman of the Council!
[Edna brings her hands to her face and shrieks.]
Edna: Eeeeeeeekkk!
Raganr: The real victims didn't want to become victims! They were made into victims by you and the rest of the Council!
Edna: I...I didn't make anyone into anything! This war, and the wars of the past... They were started by Elesius! Not me!
Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: ...Are you serious...?
Edna: ...I swear it...
Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: No way. I don't believe that for a second. It was you that started this! The ugliness inside of you!
Edna: Whaaaat?!
Ragnar: You pick a fight with anyone you deem beneath you, but when the tide turns agains you, you won't hesitate to grovel and plead to save yourself.
Ragnar: You can't bear to suffer any of the pain or blame born from your own actions, so you make elaborate excuses to push it off onto others.
Yes...that's exactly who you are!
Ragnar: The ugliness you're showing us now is the very source of the endless wars that plague this world!!
Edna: B-but...
Ragnar: So...I see... That is what it means to destroy Elesius...
Ragnar: And what it means to protect Elesius...
Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: King Hrathnir...
Raganr: Is this the task you imparted to me?
Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: But to leave such a task to a mere mercenary like me... What am I supposed to do now...?
Edna: Let me go! Just this once! I swear I'll never do anything bad again... Please... Please!
Clarissa: ...
Ragnar: ...
Clarissa: --?!
Clarissa: Everyone, be quiet... There's something else here...
[They turn to see some masked men.]
Clarissa: More of those monster tamers?!
Levin: Dammit! They really are tracking our every move!
Edna: (Those things... They seem to be after Chevalet Blanc. In that case--)
Zortroa Kinsman: ...
Clarissa: ...
[Someone warps in between them and the screen turns white.]
Levin: What the hell is going on?!
[Labyrinthia has appeared.]
Edna: Now!
Edna: Coachman--get me out of here! Take the quickest route back to the capital!
[Edna climbs back into the carriage.]
Levin: Running away like some sort of coward! So everything you said before was a lie?!
Edna: Of course it was a lie! There's no way I'd plead for anything from commoner scum like you!
Edna: I'm done with this farce. I'm not going to waste time messing around with some imposter when I've already got the real thing in my hands!
[The coachman whips the horse and the carriage hurries off. Tactical Map style, Labyrinthia bows repeatedly in both directions.]
Labyrinthia: Sorry, sorry! I didn't mean to be this late!
Labyrinthia: I'm still not very good at warping distances longer than I can see with my own eyes...
[She turns to the kinsmen.]
Labyrinthia: I'm just relieved I didn't end up someplace crazy again...
[She looks at both sides repeatedly.]
Labyrinthia: ...?
Labyrinthia: Well, well... New Chevalet Blanc recruits, perhaps? What handsome faces you all...don't have...
[One of them steps closer to her.]
Zortroa Kinsman: Hyahh!
[He does something and parts of the ground sparkle.]
Felius: Dammit, they've spread something all around here!
[Labyrinthia runs back to where the party is.]
Labyrinthia: Ms. Wordsworth!
Labyrinthia: Ah, wonderful! Sounds like that's my cue!
Labyrinthia Wordsworth, the most capable woman in Chevalet Blanc, is back! And her tactical advice is as brilliant as ever, might I add!
=D.E.R.=
Labyrinthia: Thank you for waiting, everyone--Labyrinthia's D.E.R. is back and ready for action!
Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be fighting on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line looks like this.
Labyrinthia: That stuff they scattered around the area a momen ago seems to have been "trap" items.
If you stop on a HEX with one of these traps, it's not likely to be good news for the unit in question. Tread very carefuly as you make your advance.
Of course, it'd be best not to set off the traps at all... but having ample healing ability at hand to deal with the worst-case scenario would never hurt.
Labyrinthia: Also, they didn't manage to throw any traps up on this plateau. We could take advantage of that to ensure our own safety.
Labyrinthia: For the moment, try to keep a decent amount of space between our units and the enemy.
There's no point taking up position in the middle of the danger zone if we can avoid it.
[The battle ends when all enemies have been defeated.]
Levin: Ms. Wordsworth!
Labyrinthia: Sorry to worry you all, but I'm fine now...
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: I'm ready to fight again...with all of you.
Clarissa: Labyrinthia...
[Labyrinthia hangs her head.]
Labyrinthia: I'm so very sorry. I wasn't here to protect you when you needed me most...
Clarissa: Whoa, you don't need to be like that, Labyrinthia... I'm not pretending to be a princess anymore!
Labyrinthia: But...
Clarissa: I've been through quite a bit myself...
Clarissa: I've figured out exactly what it is I want to do, not what some princess character I'm playing would want to do. So you don't need to worry about me.
Labyrinthia: Really? Everything's all right now?
Clarissa: Absolutely. So let's get back to fighting for Elesius!
Labyrinthia: Let us join hands again... So that we can preserve His Majesty's essence forever, and never lose sight of his ideals...
Levin: Then everyone's back on board! Chevalet Blanc's back in operation!
Levin: Ms. Wordsworth, let's hurry after Edna! If we can pick up our pace, we might be able to catch her!
Clarissa: Now that we're all back together, we might be able to rescue Princess Katrina too!
Labyrinthia: Princess Katrina...
Labyrinthia: ...
Levin: Ms. Wordsworth...?
Labyrinthia: Chevalet Blanc will not head to the capital.
[Everyone is surprised.]
Levin: What?!
Clarissa: But what about Princess Katrina...?
Labyrinthia: As long as the Council is using her as a puppet, Princess Katrina should be in no immediate danger. And besides, there's somewhere else I'd rather go...
Raganr: Then there's something more important than retaking the capital?
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: Edna said something earlier that caught my attention.
Labyrinthia: I can't be certain, but if my hunch is correct...
[The screen fades to black and the player is prompted to save.]
