< Act 4 - Searching for the Future >

< Act 4-1 >

-Princess Katrina's Chamber-

[Katrina is seen clutching her head in pain.]

Katrina: Stop... Please, stop... Leave me alone...!
Katrina: What are you trying to do to me...? Do you not want to be me anymore...?
Katrina: Why are you trying to get rid of me...? Tell me... Am I really not needed by anyone...?
Katrina: It itches so much... My soul... My soul never stops itching...

[Back in the desert where Chevalet Blanc is, Ragnar is seen punching into his hand, eyes screwed shut.]

Clarissa: So it was Weisheit who was making and distributing ARMs throughout Filgaia all along...
Ragnar: Those weapons destroyed my life, and the lives of my family. And we're far from the only ones...
Clarissa: ...
Ragnar: ...
Clarissa: All because these weapons exist...
Ragnar: That's right.
Ragnar: But...

[He folds his arms.]

Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: It was we humans who used them to repeatedly wage war against each other. Weisheit doesn't bear all of the responsibility.

[Clarissa looks down.]

Clarissa: Yeah...
Clarissa: ...
Clarissa: It would be so easy to blame the ARMs for everything, and ignore our own failings...
Ragnar: ...Sometimes I can't help but admire your strength, Clarissa. Truly, I'm in awe of it.
Clarissa: So now that we know that ARMs were created to be weapons of conquest, what should we do with them...?
Ragnar: ...
Ragnar: We just need to turn them into something besides weapons.
Ragnar: If our hearts are strong, we can stop using them as implements of war.
Clarissa: Do...do you think we can really do that?
Ragnar: We can. I believe that we can do it.
Clarissa: ...
Clarissa: Yeah...I believe it, too. At least, I'll try and make myself believe it!
Clarissa: One day we'll be able to stop Filgaia from using ARMs as tools of war. And when that day comes, maybe...
Clarissa: Maybe those ARMs will provide the clues taht lead us to the Yggdrasil System my mother sought?
Ragnar: Maybe.
Clarissa: So I'll accept the presence of ARMs...and someday, I'll make a new purpose for them.
Ragnar: We can change things. The human heart has the power to change anything.
Alexia: But Weisheit's ambitions live on even now, through those who would use ARMs to fan the flames of war.
Levin: We have to do something about it. That's why we came back to this time, after all.
Labyrinthia: Let's finish this fight.
Felius: And then let's begin a new future in this world.
Clarissa: Felius...
Clarissa: You're right...we can do it. I know we can!
Clarissa: We'll douse those flames of war, and find the Yggdrasil System too!

[On the world map, the player finds himself on the Secret Base. A link forms to Desert Ocean, and another to the new town of Santanica, marked with a yellow !. All the other places on the map have been disconnected.]

-Santanica-

(Shop)
Trader Rudra: Santanica is a hub for trade and bartering. What is it you're after, some rare item? Or perhaps you're here to strike it rich?
Trader Rudra (Talk): There aren't many followers of the Guardian faith in Santanica.
The higher power most people answer to here is bounty. You know, cold-hard cash!
---
Talbott the Merchant: In exchange for the tribute it pays to the Elesian crowd in goods and gold, Santanica enjoys the autonomy of a nonaggression pact with the kingdom.
Accordingly there aren't many here who feel anything special toward Elesius. What I'm saying is--
Well, I've got a hunch that you guys are that Chevalet Blanc gang that went missing at the Guardian Temple a month ago...
But I've got no reason to report something like that to the officials. Especially not with all the new taxes they've been heaping on us lately.
---
Housewife: All right, what am I going to fix for dinner tonight?
The shops in this town will sell pretty much anything they can, from food, to weapons, to plain old junk.
So it's no great shock to find fresh fruit on display right next to, say, a battle axe, for example.
No one knows the ins and outs of smart-shopping better than the housewives of Santanica.

(Synth. Shop)
Forger Etra: Even the scariest looking weapons and armor can be made cute with just the right touch of flair.
And what's synthesis without flair, I ask you? I do hope you agree.
Forger Etra (Talk): The officials from Elesius have been coming to collect the taxes more frequently, as of late.
I'm sure their coffers are getting low after last month's unpleasantness, but are new taxes on after the other the right answer? They should know better.
But if I say anything that rubs the officials the wrong way, it'll only cause trouble for these two.
---
Haute the Drifter: Etra has hired us on as bodyguards.
They say Santanica's a town brimming with vitality. Another way of putting it would be to say it's a place where anything might happen.
That's why all the merchants hire us Drifters to protect their interests.
---
Upton the Drifter: Will Katrina be the new queen of Elesius, I wonder? She hasn't seemed like herself since the Rite of Divine Coalescence.

(Pub)
Mellow Barkeep: I'll bet that desert sun's parched you dry. How about a nice drink of something cold?
Mellow Barkeep (Talk): When the sun rises here, the desert reflects the sparkling light onto all the houses.
It's a sight beautiful enough to make you wonder if the whole town were made of solid gold.
That's why this place is often called Amber Santanica.
---
Young Entrepreneur (yellow !): Those guys on the Council must be having a field day, what with Katrina undergoing the Rite of Divine Coalescence and securing her spot on the throne.
They sure didn't waste any time setting themselves up as regents and levying new taxes on the people.
It's like they're trying to groom the ideal tyrant, or something.
They've been riding pretty high and mighty since they took care of that band of rebels, Chevalet Blanc.
---
Antiquarian: It was at the founding ceremony some 14 years ago...
A group of brigands calling themselves the Nationalists, nursing bitter enmity toward the monarchy, made attempts on the lives of young Alexia and Katrina.
Some courageous youths at the parade grounds managed to scatter the attackers, but in the last moment, one assailant got through to his target.
Just when all hope seemed lost, a mysterious light shone forth from the princesses, tearing through friend and foe alike...
When the confusion settled, the princesses were found wounded and trapped beneath a fallen building.
The injury Lady Alexia sustained to her head was particularly serious, and it's said her rescuers did not recognize her when they pulled her from the rubble.
It was quite some time before her memory returned completely.
The rumors blame this foul event for the loss of Alexia's powers as a medium, not to mention the scars on Katrina's heart that she carries to this day...

(Outskirts)
Merchant's Assistant: Santanica is home to two different ports, you know.
The first is a dock for ocean-going vessels that faces the inlet. The second is a port for the sand skiffs that looks out on the dunes.
Are you familiar with the sand skiffs? They're the iron boats that chug ou black smoke as they cut across the desert.
---
Nadine the Drifter: The desert that borders Santanica to the south is known around here as "the Dunes".
The sand is so fine that you'll sink right in if you try and walk across it. We couldn't get about on the Dunes without using the sand skiffs.
---
Southern Merchant (yellow !): I heard that the terrorists who tried to disrupt Princess Katrina's Rite of Divine Coalescence ceremony were stopped by the princess herself.
It's said they just sort of melted in the light she gave off, until there was nothing left.
That power those princess mediums have is really something, huh?

[A scene starts when the player chooses to leave the town.]

Labyrinthia: I have a proposal for our next course of action.
Alexia: Our next course of action?
Labyrinthia: The city of Santanica isn't far from the capital.
Labyrinthia: And...
Labyrinthia: I doubt Charlton would imagine we could have slipped past his surveillance network to within striking distance of his home base.
Ragnar: I'm sure you're right. Even we didn't consider the possibility that we'd end up in a location so close to the capital...
Labyrinthia: Which is precisely why I'm proposing a surprise attack.
Labyrinthia: If we strike immediately, the Council won't have a chance to ready any defenses, and even our small army would have a good chance of victory.
Felius: Conversely, if we were to take our time reaching the capital...
Felius: The military forces scattered throughout Filgaia would converge on the capital, forcing us to battle a massive army we'd have little hope of beating.
Labyrinthia: Exactly.
Levin: That's a little scary... We could be striking at a perfect opportunity, or we could be rushing headlong into disaster...
Clarissa: Isn't that how it always is? And besides...
Clarissa: If we give it all we've got, sometimes even disasters can be turned into opportunities. ...Right?

[On the world map, a link forms to The Quiet Sands, marked with a red !.]

-Path through the Desert-

[A cut-in shows a familiar carriage. Inside is Edna, gnashing her teeth.]

Edna: Hmph. These peasants have no appreciation for how hard it is to be their ruler!
Edna: Isn't it enough that we're making a country for them to live in? You'd think they'd be happy to hand over more money! But no!
Edna: Those damned Santanicans... Making me come all this way to squeeze their taxes out of them personally! For that, I'm taking everything they've got!

[The carriage slows down a stop and the horses whinny.]

Edna: What is it now?!

[Edna leans out of the carriage to see Chevalet Blanc.]

Edna: Ch...Chevalet Blanc?!
Levin: Hey frog-hag! How's your tax-collection trip going?
Ragnar: It doesn't look like you brought much of an escort this time, does it?
Ragnar: I would strongly urge you to surrender. Unless you have some perverse desire to get hurt? If so, we'd be more than happy to oblige you.
Edna: Y...Y...YOU!!! You were planning to gang up and have your way with me?!
Edna: Well you're out of luck--my hired swords will never let you hurt me! Come, Tormenta Triad, and fulfill your duty!

[The Tormenta Triad suddenly appears between the carriage and the party.]

Clarissa: Those guys again...!
Edna: Hmm? You already know of my terrible trio? Truly their notoriety knows no bounds... Their name instills fear throughout the realm!
Trueno: It's you! It's finally you! We've been waiting for 14 years...!
Lluvia: Oh, how we've longed for another opportunity to face you, to finish what we began so long ago...!
Viento: How strange... To the tiniest detail, they look identical to the way they did that day, 14 years ago...
Clarissa: You're the ones you haven't changed at all!
Viento: Heh heh heh.
Turneo: Hah hah hah.
Lluvia, Viento, Trueno: Wah hah hah hah hah!
Clarissa: What's so funny?!
Lluvia: Soon we shall see our fortieth year. At last our ages are catching up to our appearances!
Labyrinthia: I'm 34!
Levin: Teach! It's not a contest!
Edna: Tormenta Triad! I didn't hire you to chat! Quit wagging your tongues and start swinging your blades!
Edna: Show me the pride you professional villains hold so dear! And don't screw it up like you did last time!
Viento: What did you say?!
Lluvia: Calm down, Viento! Heeding the client is part of a professional villain's job!
Lluvia: And besides, today is the day that we reclaim what we lost 14 years ago!
Trueno: Yes! Let's loose the skills we've honed over the years on them, and grind them into the sand!
Felius: ...Are they going to attack...?
Edna: Hey! Don't forget what I hired you for!
Edna: I don't know what sort of history you have with them, and I don't care--protecting me is your top priority!
For now, just buy some time until we can get the hell out of here!
Viento: Do you understand nothing about us? We don't need to stall! We can bring them down here and now!
Edna: What if I get attacked by monsters while you're busy killing each other? Wouldn't that tarnish your precious honor all the more?
Viento: You have no right to speak of our honor!
Alexia: Sheesh, now they've started fighting each other? I guess the brothers don't enjoy working outside the family.
Lluvia: Viento! That's enough!
Lluvia: ...
Lluvia: As strength rules all in this world, only the strongest deserve to have their way... Isn't that the principle to which we brothers have devoted our lives?
Lluvia: Our clients have more power than us, so their will must be done. That is the natural order of the world, as you well know.
Viento: ...
Trueno: You're always this way! You've just gone soft because our client is a woman!
Edna: I've heard just about enough! Right now my safety is more important than your lowly peasant pride!
Edna: Got it? Give them a good fight, then hurry back to me! Don't leave me walking alone!
Lluvia: ...
Lluvia: Wounded pride turns to anger, and that anger breeds greater strength...!
Lluvia: Chevalet Blanc! This time, you will not interfere with our job!

=D.E.R.=

Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be fighting on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line looks like this.
Labyrinthia: The Tormenta Triad... The most notorious criminal gang in the land. We have everything to fear from them.
But judging by the teamwork they showed at the Founding Day ceremony, their true power is unleashed only when all three fight as a team.
Labyrinthia: All that remains for us, then, is to demolish the trinity. Let's begin with that.
Target your sights on one Triad member. If we can defeat one quickly enough, the effect on their fighting power should prove devastating...
Labyrinthia: Even a raging storm cannot block a quick, pointed attack. Speedy maneuvering will be the deciding factor here!

Trueno: The lightning sears the skies...
Viento: The wind erodes the mountains...
Lluvia: And the rain bores through the land itself!
We are the three terrors of nature... Nothing can stand against our mystic assault!

[The battle ends when all enemies have been defeated.]

Viento: Brothers... If we tarry any longer, we risk damaging our mission success rate...
Trueno: You want to quit now? But we've barely gotten started! This bunch is proving to be much tougher than expected...
Lluvia: We will never forget! That day 14 years ago, when you interfered with our attack on the royal family...
Lluvia: Chevalet Blanc--you have tarnished our honor and jeopardized our mission! Next time, we will finish you for certain!
Clarissa: ...
Lluvia: Then you shall see--the only thing that can mend a wound inflicted by strength is an even greater strength!
Labyrinthia: Why is it always "strength this" and "strength that" with you three? Why are you so obsessed with strength?!
Lluvia: Because strength is the only true system of order!
Lluvia: It is the strong who impose that order, who force the weak to abide by that order! It is the right of the strong to pass judgment on those beneath them!
Lluvia: Only the strongest deserve to survive!
Labyrinthia: You speak of people as if they were wild beasts...
Lluvia: We must live in accordance with the laws of nature! Only beasts are prepared to face the future of this world!
Labyrinthia: ...
Lluvia: If you deny our philosophy, and wish to impose yours in its place, then you may force it upon us--if you possess the strength to do so!
Viento: Heh heh heh heh...
Trueno: Hah hah hah hah...
Lluvia, Viento, Trueno: Mwah hah hah hah hah!

[The three warp away.]

Levin: It looks like that old frog-hag scurried away while they were keeping us busy...
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: We must hurry on to the capital. Time is no ally of ours in this campaign.

-Elesius Castle: Main Hall-

[Katrina walks into the hall, clutching her head.]

Katrina: Aaahhhh...
Katrina: It...itches. My soul itches...
Katrina: Somebody...help me... Stop the drums in my soul... When the drums beat, the itching... I can't bear it!
Katrina: Please...make it stop...

[Eisen shows up, flanked by some Knights.]

Katrina: Eisen! Eisen, help me... It itches so much... Help me!
Royal Knights Captain Eisen: ...

[Eisen and his Knights walk past her.]

Katrina: Don't go, Eisen! Don't leave me alone!
Katrina: Why...why won't anyone help me...?
Katrina: Somebody, stop it... Stop the itching in my soul...
Katrina: The drums haven't stopped since the rite... Why won't anyone make them stop...?

[The player is prompted to save.]
