< Act 4-3 >
-Council Chamber-
Edna: Chevalet Blanc is almost here! What are you going to do, Charlton?!
Charlton: Prepare an ambush, of course.
Edna: But with Weisheit out of the picture, we can't rely on any of his special weapons, right?
Edna: How are you planning to stop their invasion?
Charlton: There exist secret necromantic arts that have been passed down through House Blunt for generations... I'll use those to slaughter them in a single strike.
Edna: But it would take a long time to do the rituals necessary to prepare a response of that scale...
Edna: Will it be done in time? They could get here at any minute!
Charlton: I've sent the Zortroa to attack them directly. That will buy us some time.
Charlton: I don't care how many of those wretches fall before Chevalet Blanc, as long as they carry out their mission.
Edna: I can't imagine they'll continue to take the short end of the stick like this every time...
[Charlton smirks.]
Charlton: They don't mind being used as sacrificial pawns, so long as it gets them a step closer towards reclaiming their lost homeland.
Edna: (Hmph. Who does he think he is, using everyone and everything to his own ends like that?)
Edna: (I suppose he plans to dispose of me and Rupert next. As if I'd stand around and let that happen!)
Edna: (The next time we need to throw someone to the wolves, it's going to be you, Charlton. But before you, I'm getting rid of that creepy puppet princess...)
[Charlton frowns.]
Charlton: Edna...
[She brings her hands to her face in horror.]
Edna: --?! Wha...what?!
Charlton: Don't hinder me any more than you already have.
Edna: ...
[On the world map, a path forms to The Flatwoods, marked with a red !. As soon as the player enters, Ragnar runs up to see Chelle with some kinsmen behind her.]
Chelle: We've been waiting!
Ragnar: Chelle!
Chelle: I am pleased that we have another opportunity to meet on the battlefield. At last, our covenant with the Council can be fulfilled!
Chelle: You will die here, Chevalet Blanc--so that the nation of Zortroa can be reborn!
Ragnar: And to achieve that goal, you've discarded your humanity, polluted your body with the powers of monsters...
Ragnar: Do your people bear no reservations about being transformed into implements of war?!
CHelle: So asks the mercenary, he himself an implement of war as well?
Ragnar: ...Yes, I am indeed a mercenary.
Ragnar: Just like you, I lost everything to Elesius, and became an implement of war in order to exact my revenge.
Ragnar: The very reason I joined Chevalet Blanc was not to protect Elesius, but to destroy it!
Chelle: ...
Ragnar: And yet, I discovered something as I fought alongside my companions in Chevalet Blanc.
Ragnar: I realized that my thirst would not be sated with the destruction of Elesius alone. I realized that there was something more that I needed to destroy.
Chelle: ...
Ragnar: What I need to destroy is those like Weisheit who hide in the shadows, manipulating wars for their own selfish ends...
Ragnar: Or rather...I need to destroy the greater, more nebulous thing that sustains such men...
Chelle: That is what you wish to destroy, Ragnar Blitz Lebrett?!
Ragnar: It's not just me who wants to destroy it!
Ragnar: Listen to me, Chelle... If you and your people truly wish to revive your homeland, then that is what you too should seek to destroy!
Chelle: I've heard enough wagging from your silver tongue! You will give your lives for the Zortroa Kinship!
=D.E.R.=
Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be fighting on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line looks like this.
Labyrinthia: We've fought Paigoels before...but they're under Zortroan control this time. We'll have to block off their ley point access, too.
If we want to keep any advantage over them, we must keep the Paigoels from strengthening themselves as much as we can.
Labyrinthia: It takes more than just weapons and armor to turn the tide of a battle. Information can play just as important a role than any of that.
Never forget to analyze and internalize your enemies' data. That info may prove to be just as powerful as the sword in your hand.
[The battle ends when all enemies have been defeated. Tactical Map style, Ragnar steps forward.]
Ragnar: Open your eyes, why don't you?!
Ragnar: We can't afford to squabble with each other! We're just the same as you--we're both trying to destroy the same thing!
Chelle: What? Are you saying that we share a common enemy?
Ragnar: Of course. You've got your own free will, after all. You must have realized it by now...
Ragnar: If you take a country by force, it's only a matter of time before it's taken away from you by force. Don't you understand?
Chelle: What...what nonsense are you spouting?! If it's taken from us, we'll simply take--
Ragnar: Take it back? By force? Again?
Chelle: ...
[Ragnar steps forward again, closer to where Chelle is.]
Ragnar: Maybe you can get your country back that way, but do you think that country will have any peace? Any tranquility?
Ragnar: No...all you'll have is a perpetual cycle of warfare, stretching on to infinity...
Chelle: ...
[Chelle steps forward as well.]
Chelle: Even if what you say is true... We cannot change our way of life! We are the Zortroa Kinship!!
[Chelle swipes at the air and summons four kinsmen in front of her.]
Ragnar: So this is it? Fight, or nothing?!
=D.E.R.=
Labyrinthia: Let's take a look at the Tactical Map we'll be fighting on.
Labyrinthia: We'll be starting here...
Labyrinthia: And the enemy line... Well, it looks like this, but...
Labyrinthia: ...
Labyrinthia: Without monsters, monster tamers cannot unlock their true potential...and yet here they are, on the offensive without any monsters.
Labyrinthia: They might have prepared an ambush...or perhaps they're hiding their charges, concealing their true strength from us.
That may be why this tension, this threat in the air seems stronger than could be explained by the number of enemy units we can see.
Labyrinthia: The position of both sides' units will be a vital factor in our strategy.
Take a good look at our starting positions, and whatever you do, always keep a full grasp of what's going on in the battlefield!
Chelle: You must be defeated! There is no way for you to proceed except through us! Claw will strike sword and sword shall strike claw!
There is no such thing as a common enemy between us! My only enemy is the one I see before my eyes!
[The battle ends when all enemies have been defeated. Tactical Map style again, Chelle is on her knees. Ragnar steps forward.]
Ragnar: Is this the only way we can be? Will I never be able to greet you except as a foe on the battlefield...?
Chelle: If I were still human, perhaps the story may have been different...
Chelle: But my body has been remade into a living weapon! My heart...my very blood...!!
Chelle: Ragnar Blitz Lebrett...are you int he habit of speaking to weapons? Why are you trying to foist your reason on a weapon like me...?
Ragnar: Because...you're a woman.
[Chelle stands.]
Chelle: --?!
Chelle: D-don't be ridiculous... I discarded my femininity ages ago. What are you thinking?! This is a battlefield!
Chelle: ...
Chelle: ...Yes, it's all too clear now... This is all a trick! A trap to shame me into confused submission!
Ragnar: Wow, you seem awfully nervous, all of a sudden. It's kind of cute.
Chelle: Grrrrrr...!!
Ragnar: But Chelle... Would you have reacted that way if you weren't still a woman?
Chelle: --?!
Ragnar: And that burning shame coursing through your veins... What more proof do you need that you're human? You're no weapon!
Chelle: ...
Chelle: Don't...don't talk nonsense... I'm... This body is already...
Ragnar: Not "already", Chelle. "Still".
Chelle: ...
[He takes a few more steps closer to her.]
Ragnar: Come with us, Chelle... We're after the same goal...the same enemy.
Chelle: ...
Ragnar: And the thing we've got to destroy... Well, it's enormous. We can't do it unless we join together...
Chelle: I...we...
[She pauses before taking a few steps forward, but suddenly a gigantic worm bursts its head through the ground.]
Levin: Whoa!! What the heck is that?!
[The worm attacks Ragnar and burrows underground. Chelle turns around.]
Chelle: (...)
Chelle: (Is there no regaining your humanity once you've thrown it aside...?)
Chelle: (...)
Chelle: (But even if it proves to be an untenable dream...)
Chelle: (Even if it was a fleeting, faraway dream, seen only for a single moment...you allowed me to dream it.)
Ragnar: --Chelle!!
Chelle: Ragnar Blitz Lebrett...there is no going together with you. You and I could never be the same...
[Ragnar starts running to her.]
Ragnar: Chelle...!
[She turns to face him.]
Chelle: This body... This soul... My entire existence is devoted to Piedras Blancas...
I cannot abandon my life as one of the Zortroa Kinship. I'm not strong enough to change my way of life...
[She turns and runs off.]
Ragnar: Chelle... You don't realize... None of us are strong...
-Princess Katrina's Chamber-
[Edna stands before Katrina with a knife in hand. Katrina stares at her blankly.]
Edna: Ah hah! Hah hah hah...
Edna: Are you scared? If you're scared, let's see you shiver, puppet princess!
Katrina: ...
Edna: The Rite of Divine Coalescence is over, and you are officially the heir to the throne of Elesius.
And as your regent, that gives me all sorts of new governmental powers.
Edna: Finally I can shape this country without having to grovel for anyone's approval. And therefore, my puppet princess, I have no further need of you.
Edna: Ah hah hah hah hah! Are you shivering? Are you trembling?
Edna: After all, that's all you can do now!
Katrina: ...
Edna: Oh, that's right! You don't even know what "fear" is, do you? Truly, what a freak you are...
Edna: That reminds me, I don't think I've ever had a chance to tell you how much I utterly despise you!
Katrina: And I hate you too, Edna.
Edna: Is that right? What a relief! Knowing that will make it so much easier to kill you!
[Edna attempts to stab Katrina, but the knife breaks as it touches the girl's abdomen, blocked by a golden light.]
Edna: --Huh?!
Edna: What...what's this light?! It's just like...at the rite...
[The screen flashes white for a moment and Edna is thrown back against the wall.]
Edna: Yearggghhh!
Edna: Urgh...
[Katrina glares at Edna, the top of her face shadowed by her bangs.]
Edna: Eeeeeeeeeeekkk!!!
Katrina: What's the matter, Edna? Why do you shriek like that?
Edna: Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
Katrna: Is that what you meant by fear? What you meant by trembling? I'm afraid I don't know too much about it...
Katrina: ...
[Katrina smiles eerily.]
Katrina: I don't know much, but the emotion that emanates from you... It feels nice.
Katrina: Hee hee hee. When I taste your fear, the itching in my soul feels a little better...
Katrina: Won't you let me taste more?
Edna: Who...who are you?!
Katrina: I am Katrina. The Katrina you hate. The Katrina who hates you.
Edna: Eeeeee.... Eeeeekkkk!
Katrina: Should I kill you now? If I did that, would I learn more about fear?
Edna: No... Nooooo!!
Katrina: You seem to be quite scared right now. You must not want to die...
Katrina: Hee hee hee... How interesting. I love the way it makes me feel.
[Edna brings her hands together and starts to cry.]
Edna: P-p-please don't kill me...! I...I'll do anything! Anything at all!
[Katrina laughs.]
Katrina: Hah hah hah hah hah hah! No! I want to feel more fear!
Edna: If you spare me, I'll let you taste a much greater fear! So please! Don't kill me!
Katrina: ...A much greater fear...?
Katrina: ...
Katrina: ...Really...?
Edna: Really...! I wouldn't lie to you!
[Katrina closes her eyes, smirking.]
Katrina: You liar.
Katrina: It's all right. I'll play along.
Katrina: And in exchange, you will satisfy my thirst for fear. I want more. Much more.
Edna: Of...of course... I'll give you rich, sweet fear... The best there is...!
Katrina: Hee hee hee... I'm looking forward to it. I wonder what sort of fear you'll bring me?
Edna: (What's happening? That girl... Is she even Katrina anymore?)
Edna: (...No...)
Edna: (If anything, it's like some other presence has taken her form... Is there something lurking inside the princess medium...?)
Edna: (...)
Edna: (Could it be...a Guardian...? Could one have remained within her after the Rite of Divine Coalescence?)
[The screen fades to black and the player is prompted to save.]
