I love Gilmore Girls, but if you haven't tried it yet and get hooked, you're in for seven seasons.

I don't see many movies, but Spellbound and Howl's Moving Castle are favorites within recent memory.

As for series, we're hooked on Battle Star Galactica and enjoyed the pilot for Big Love (haven't had time to see more yet).

Here is a longer list than I had originally intended:

Movies
Impromptu (Judy Davis as Georges Sand--need I say more)
Saving Face (women in conflict with traditional Chinese mores in contemporary New York City)
Children of Men (set in a near dystopic future in London)
Mrs. Brown (Judi Dench as Queen Victoria)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (and I don't even like Jim Carrey)
Holy Smoke (Cate Winslet plays mind games with Harvey Keitel)
Hideous Kinky (beautiful scenes in Morocco)
Elizabeth (in preparation for the upcoming sequel)
Heaven (Cate Blanchett in a thought provoking film set in Italy)
The Aviator (Martin Scorsese, Howard Hughes, Katherine Hepburn)
The Royal Tenenbaums (a very quirky family)

From Australia (just because)
Shine
Flirting
Rikki and Pete
The Piano
Whale Rider
Muriel's Wedding
Japanese Story
Walkabout
My Brilliant Career

There is a very funny british show called Coupling--sort of like friends, only WAYYYYY better. I was also going to mention Big Love, but several people have already said that. :) Dr. Who is also a favorite one, I've heard. Let us know what you decide!
