“Kate, will you watch Aaron for me?” Claire asked, holding her son against her breast and bobbing him up and down gently.
       “Sure, where are you going?”
“Charlie said he had some big surprise for me or something.” Kate listened to her talk, knowing she was trying to sound responsible and annoyed at having to stick someone else with her child, but her bright eyes gave away her real excitement and anticipation.
“Yeah, it’s no problem.” Kate took Aaron, cooing at him for a moment before looking up. “We’ll be fine. Now, go.” She shooed Claire away, kicking some sand at the woman. She kissed Aaron’s forehead before walking down the beach in the late afternoon sun.
“Charlie?” She called, searching for him in their tent but finding no trace that he’d been there recently.
“Miss Littleton,” she heard Hurley’s voice from outside of the tent and she ventured out to find him.
“Yes…Mister Reyes?” She asked, very confused.
“Mister Pace requests your presence down the beach, by the big rock. If you’ll come with me,” he said, very properly extending his arm for her. She smiled quizzically and put her arm through his.
“What’s going on?” She asked finally as they began to walk.
“Dude, just play along. Charlie made me promise to do this,” he whispered. She nodded and agreed, not wanting to get Hurley in trouble.
“Here you are, have a nice evening,” he said as they got the rock. She thanked him and looked around for Charlie, seeing only his footprints in the sand.
“Charlie what on earth is going on?” She asked, walking around the rock. “Oh!” She exclaimed, her eyes falling on the most beautiful picture. On the beach on a bed of leaves, was a blanket. On it was a beautiful, tropical picnic with all of her favorite island fruit: guava, mango, and bananas. Charlie was standing to one side smiling proudly, holding a bouquet of flowers. He handed them to her and kissed her cheek politely.
“You’ve been under so much stress recently I wanted to do something for you,” he explained. She was speechless, looking at how he had combed his hair to the side and made an effort to make things perfect.
“I can’t believe you did this for me.”
“Claire,” he said seriously. “I love you, you know that, right? I would do anything for you.”
“I love you, too, Charlie. This is the,” she choked on her words, trying not to cry. “the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me.” He sat her down next to him, their backs resting against the rock facing the ocean.
“It’s beautiful,” she said after they’d eaten most of the fruit. His head was turned and he was looking at her. Her peach colored skin, light honey gold from the son, was smiling, her eyes set like sapphires under her dark lashes.
“You are beautiful,” he said. She bit her pink lip and turned her head to face him, their noses touching. Leaning in, they kissed. Their bodies were warmed by the late sun, and by the sparks set off between their lips each time they kissed.
Claire put her hand on Charlie’s chest and felt his heart beating fast.
“Are you alright?” She asked, puling from their kiss and looking down at her hand on his shirt.
“I’m wonderful,” he assured her, putting his hand over hers and squeezing. She was always reassured when he did things like this. Little gestures like bringing her water or offering to take Aaron when she looked tired always touched her and dug the niche in her heart a bit deeper. She had always wanted love, but when Thomas left her and she was stuck with an unwanted pregnancy and no money, the quest had abandoned her. When she met Charlie and they had slowly gotten to each other, their comfortable friendship developing into emotions deeper than she thought she would find in such a terrible situation, love didn’t seem as unrealistic anymore.
Now as they sat together in front of the tremendously blue ocean, watching the colors of the sunset bounce off of the never ending waves, listening to their crashes mingled with the cries of sea birds, she knew the first moment they met that Aaron had a father, and she had a partner in life. Charlie Pace was the one for her.
Charlie had known she was the one for him the first day they met. Her blonde hair and pale skin were oddly different from the people he had experienced daily in Australia, but he was drawn to her. Her necklace, the Chinese character for love shone on her chest and drew his attention to her beautiful smile, slightly childish and goofy but outstanding. The feeling he felt when he was with her, his fingers in her soft hair, touching her soft hair, was rawer and more powerful than he had ever felt on any drug, with any girl, on any stage. It scared him at first, with his fist tightly closed around his only bag of heroin, knowing it would run out. But having Claire there, even if she didn’t know what was always happening to him internally, was the biggest comfort. She was warmth and sun and joy and good in a world of bad.
“Claire,” he said, turning to sit on his knees in front of her. “It’s been insane here, pure madness and I don’t think I could have done it without you here. So..” he fumbled through his pocket and held out a small box. “It’s not much, but it’s the best I could do on short notice.” He took the lid off and held it out to her. She reached inside, her eyes shining, and pulled out a necklace.
“Shannon helped me pick one out. There’s a surprising amount of jewelry on planes,” he said, rambling a bit.
“Why are you giving this to me, Charlie?” She asked, thumb running over the ruby pendant.
He took a deep breath and took her free hand in his. “Will you marry me, Claire Littleton?” Her eyes flew up to meet his and any hint of hesitation was gone.
       “Yes.”
