So today I got to have a big ol computer scare. Big Red (my Sony Vaio lappy) started making odd hard drive grinding noises yesterday and freezing up for a few seconds at a time, so I powered it down for the night and let it cool off. If you're getting grinding sounds when it starts up, your harddrive is dying. You may have bought it some time, but take it to the doctor. <3

I deleted the last major thing I downloaded and today has been good so far for the machine. No grinding or nothin.

a) portable hard drive is item #1 on the xmas list.
2) I was only able to successfully do the fsck -from- the live CD and it worked fine, with the exception of a few bad blocks it couldn't read. I'd link you to similar problems on the ubuntu forums, but they seem to be down. Anyways, Everything's back to normal, or at least seems so. The Hard drive has quieted down and I still have all my shit (and backed up now too) No explosions or anything.
