The envelope was a shimmering gold and looked out of place, tucked in between plain white envelopes Kurt Hummel knew contained bills that needed to be paid. He knew it was that time of year again, time for the parade of hopefuls making fools out of themselves for the chance to be chosen by The Dominion’s little puppet. It was all for show, he was sure of that, and the person chosen in the end was the choice of The Dominion, not the choice of The Chosen One. He had no desire to be a part of the charade and he hoped the envelope was for his younger brother Finn. Finn would be a good choice for the show and he could see The Dominion wanting him to win, which would be good for his family. Kurt, on the other hand, tended to speak his mind too much and his attitude toward the whole process of The Chosen One picking his or her true love out of a pool of thirty contestants wasn’t a secret ( ... )

The name on the envelope simply said HUMMEL. Inside would hold the name of this year’s Chosen One, some of the girl’s likes and dislikes, and what time Finn would be expected to arrive at the castle. Knowing his brother, Kurt opened the envelope. He had to make sure Finn had the necessary items that The Dominion would require him to bring, items such as a few suits, some casual clothing, pictures of his family ( ... )

As he predicted, Kurt was the only male standing in the huge holding room, awaiting to be taken to the stylists where he would get a makeover and be made to look presentable for the camera. He never thought he looked bad or dirty, but he did have the appearance of someone unmistakably from the lower class. He was led into a small room where two people, a man and a woman, waited and was quickly ushered into the adjoining bathroom for a shower. Then his hair was styled in a way he hated, and would fix as soon as he was back in the holding room, his skin was moisturized, and he was given clothes to put on: a red silk shirt and a pair of tight black pants. It was over an hour of standing in place while the crews set up. Kurt listened to the other girls chatter with each other but he made no move to engage in their conversations. They were all shallow and meaningless to him. He wasn’t curious about if this Puck was a good kisser, they wouldn’t be kissing. He wasn’t curious is Puck would like the book or movie he brought, they wouldn’t be discussing it. He definitely wasn’t curious about the kind of underwear Puck wore, he’d never see it ( ... )
