Blaine's hissy fit over not being able to use hair gel at the prom bugs Kurt. Yes, he understands the importance of looking good, but as they decided to go to the prom, he wanted to enjoy being there with his boyfriend. You only get one senior prom and Blaine sulking like a toddler didn't really make the best night. So he confronts him after the prom, and the rest of the ND takes takes Kurt's side. After all, Blaine gets very dramatic over everything: Kurt texting, his brother taking his toy when they were small.

He has to roll his eyes a little at the look on Blaine’s face because it’s ridiculous, he looks like he’s ten seconds away from crying because his hair isn’t plastered to his skull like usual (and really, Kurt can admit that if he were Blaine’s hair he’d be rebelling too after how it’s usually treated) but when he goes to turn around, to head back to the bathroom to fix his hair and probably miss the rest of prom at this rate, Kurt grabs his hand

Witnessing how jealous he’d gotten of Cooper, how completely out of proportion he’d blown the whole thing with Chandler; these days Kurt’s starting to feel like he spends most of his time talking Blaine down from some emotional crisis or another. He’s tried being supportive (because he’s starting to think that only Rachel Berry at her worst could understand that level of melodrama) but he’s had enough

There’s something about the way that Blaine curls further into himself, arms laced tight around his chest and face schooled that makes him angrier - because of course he has to act like he’s the victim now and make Kurt look like the bad guy

The clapping peters off into something awkward when no-one else joins in, leaving only silence and the sound of Blaine’s breathing, loud and uneven in the night and Kurt just wants him to react, to say something and prove that he’s actually been listening. And that stupid piece of confetti is still sitting there, caught in Blaine’s ridiculous hair

By the time he and Finn make it home he feels weightless and happy and just a little bit tipsy, though he’d only drunk the one wine cooler that Santana had practically forced on him. He’d had fun hanging out with his friends and making up for the lost time that had been spent on that stupid anti-prom and Blaine’s sulking

The unimpressed look on his father’s face at his answer makes him sigh and rub a hand over his face. When he looks up the expression on his father’s face hasn’t changed, though there’s something worried there now, “Look Kurt, I don’t know what happened tonight, but I do know you and the kid I know would never put Blaine’s safety at risk like that, so what’s going on

And maybe it is about the hair, maybe it is about wanting to feel in control and not stand out, not draw attention like he had when he’d finally walked back in with his hair a mess and he’d made fun of him, teased him and oh
