When Kurt was eight years old, his mother killed herself. At the funeral his uncle told him the reason why she killed herself was because she couldn't live with the knowledge that she had brought a fag into the world.

Kurt never stopped blaming himself for his mother's death. He withdrew into himself, became very quiet and timid. When he realised that his voice wasn't breaking, he barely talked, not even to his dad because he was afraid that he sounded 'faggy'.

For some reason (up to writer) Burt has Kurt transferred to Dalton. Kurt meets Blaine and is shocked that someone can e openly gay and not ashamed of it.

When Blaine meets Kurt he is instantly attracted to the quiet boy, and decides to try and help him come out of his shell. Blaine finds out why kurt is so shy and helps him to realise that he has nothing to be ashamed of.

Katherine Hummel was good friends with all her neighbors. She cared deeply for her husband and son, even when Kurt decided he'd much rather have tea parties with his dad then run around and get dirty like most boys his age. She worked hard, and was always seen with a smile on her face. She was the last person anyone would have expected to commit suicide.

So no one could quite believe it when she downed a bottle of pills and was found by her husband, too far gone to be saved. Everyone was still in a state of horrified shock as her body was lowered into the ground.

After the funeral, when everyone was starting to make their way to the wake, Kurt watched as Burt halfheartedly tried to calm down his Aunt Mildred, who smelt even stronger than usual and was sobbing hysterically, occasionally saying in a loud dramatic voice how Katherine's death was so horrible and sadKurt noticed his Uncle Scott making his way over to him. Kurt didn't like his uncle. He was loud, and always seemed to be angry, especially with Kurt ( ... )

When Kurt finally went back to school, the comment his Uncle had made was still bothering him. He wasn't really sure what the word fag meant, but from what his Uncle said, it was a very bad thing. He'd already thought about asking his dad, but whenever he'd went to him in the past about bad things, like being pushed over or teased at school, his dad had always been very angry. He hated it when his dad was mad ( ... )

I'm really enjoying this already, so please take this as the friendly constructive criticism it is, but uhm. I don't know if you're from the UK and that's why you're using 'mum' but nobody in America really does and certainly not little kids from small-town Ohio. They'd say 'mom'. I really like your story, but the Britishism was pulling me out of it.

I had the same thought. Nothing pulls me out of a story faster than American kids saying 'mum' or British kids saying 'mom'.

I really liked most of the story, but like you said, first Anon, the 'mum' kinda pulled me out of the story.

Author Anon, I'd recommend getting a beta who can britpick for you.

Oh god, sorry about that. Thankyou so much for pointing that out. I'll keep in mind that Kurt lives in America in future.

I didn't think I'd like this fic when I read the prompt but it blew me away. I just shudder to think of a child being put into the position Kurt was, so shortly after his mom's death. Very nice, want more badly.

There was rapid knocking on the front door. Kurt looked up from his algebra homework, waited to see if his dad was going to answer it, then finally got up to open the door. His Aunt Mildred stood there, a huge excited grin on her face ( ... )

Kurt makes his way down to his room before his dad and Aunt Mildred have a chance to find out that he was eavesdropping. He grabbed some clean jeans and a shirt then thought about doing something different with his hair. He ended up just sweeping his fingers through it to make it look tidy.

Breadstix is the only somewhat fancy place in Lima, so Aunt Mildred winds up taking them there, and watches with quietly disappointed eyes as Kurt points to what he wants on the menu and Burt orders for him.

Alcoholic drinks were served at Breadstix if you had an id with you, so by the time they were ready to go home, Aunt Mildred was drunk. Burt guided her onto the couch and gave her a spare blanket.

Before Kurt makes his way to bed, Burt pulls him into a tight hug.

“You’d let me know if anyone at school was making fun of you, or harassing you, right?” he asked.

Kurt nodded. Burt sighed and patted him on the shoulder.

“Alright, kiddo,” he said. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

Due to being quiet, and keeping to himself all of the time, Kurt was mostly left alone at school. He had no friends, no enemies, and even the teachers seemed to forget that he even existed. There was only one person who seemed to have an issue with Kurt, and that was Dave Karofsky ( ... )

On a Wednesday after P.E., Kurt was in the locker room, had just finished his shower, and was grabbing his clothes out of his locker to change into. He was the only one left; he didn’t like showering with the other boys, and if he was late to class after, so be it ( ... )

D:

poor Kurt. ;___;
Karofsky questioning him was interesting, but he shouldn't try to get validation by, you know, sexually assaulting someone! ugh.
Kurt, bb, you need to leave now. :'(

but I'm a it confused - did his mom actually kill herself because Kurt's a "fag" or did his uncle just make that up?

The uncle was lying. He was angry, and mourning the death of a family member, and he took it out on Kurt. He'd never gotten along with Kurt, being homophobic and with Kurt not being your average little boy, so he chose to take it out on Kurt.
