Chapter 9

"Sungmin," Kyuhyun greeted his cousin at the door, very much relieved to have him. The past few days had been a mess, with his sister crying at the news of their father going to war and his mother scolding and being very disagreeable altogether.

But the minute Sungmin came, everything had seemed to fall into place. Sungmin had managed to calm Jessica down. He had an aura of joy around him and Jessica clung to him, glad for his company. He was a great help to his aunt, and her tongue grew less sharp. His uncle was pleased to have one more man in the house. Kyuhyun was even more pleased. The boys went for long walks together, growing closer each day.

"I'm so glad you're here, Sungmin," Jessica sighed happily one day. Sungmin patted his little cousin on her head. She smiled at him. "You've brought such joy ever since the grey news. Do you think you could do the same for Seohyun?" Jessica asked.

"Seohyun?" Isn't she the one that lives near? We used to play with ehr, the four of us, during summer, isn't it?" Sungmin asked, surprised. Jessica nodded. "Her father for recruited in for war too and her mother is becoming far too domineering," Jessica explained. "Why don't we go see her now?" Kyuhyun mumbled and Jessica rolled her eyes. "Oh, you're just so eager to see her," she grinned. "Whatever," Kyuhyun mumbled and Sungmin laughed. "Right then! Kaja!" he said, clapping Kyuhyun on his back and helping Jessica to her feet.

"Sica!" Seohyun exclaimed, her once dull eyes brightening as she saw Jessica. Sungmin watched her intently as she hugged Jessica. He could see that she was very tired. Her ashen face and dark eye circles told it all. But underneath, she was very pretty. Even now, he could not help but smile as he watched Kyuhyun staring dreamily at her.

"Seohyun, do you remember Sungmin?" Jessica asked, pulling Sungmin forward. "Ah! yes!" Seohyun smiled warmly at him, and he returned the smile. "Hi Seohyun!" Kyuhyun greeted eagerly, pushing Sungmin aside. Seohyun blushed slightly and murmured a soft "hello".

"I don't think my help will be needed. Your brother should be able to handle her," Sungmin whispered into Jessica's ear, his eyes dancing mischieviously. Jessica stifled a laugh and nodded in agreement.

True enough, Kyuhyun was remedy enough for Seohyun. As they walked through the garden together, Kyuhyun and Seohyun walked in front of Jessica and Sungmin. The two could see how Kyuhyun and Seohyun had secret admiration for each other. They noted how Seohyun would shyly look up at Kyuhyun and then look away, only to be drawn to him again. They laughed at her Kyuhyun ran his hand through his hair as he tried to entertain Seohyun, afraid that he might be boring her. They felt exasperated at Kyuhyun for not taking Seohyun's hand and longed to knock some sense into Seohyun to lean against him.

When they went back that night, they left a very different Seohyun behind. Her cheeks were red now, her eyes sparkling furiously, her smile bright and her posture upright and alert.

Sooyoung felt like bursting into tears. Her brother's condition had not improved, it had only worsened. Her mother had wanted to fetch the doctor, but Ryeowook would not allow it. In between coughs, he had said that it would be a waste of money. Sooyoung prayed fervently for her brother to be well again. She longed for him to be laughing again, to be picking flowers with her again, even if she had to endure his taunts, she was willing to do it. "Please God, please let oppa be well again," she prayed, hands clasped together, knees bent.
