Pairing: Blaine and Kurt
Length: 4100, more or less.
Warnings: Slash? I think that one’s obvious. Mmm I think there’s isn’t much to warn.
Summary: Blaine wants to propose, Kurt wants to organize the perfect Christmas and Burt tries to calm a really nervous Blaine down so he can do what he plans.
While Kurt Hummel, loved Christmas shopping it certainly wasn’t Blaine Anderson’s favourite thing to do on the Holidays. Well, actually it wasn’t his favourite thing in any moment of the year, he didn’t even like to go window shopping for Christ sake! But, there are some things you do for the person you love, and when it’s Kurt Hummel we’re talking about any kind of shopping is at the top of the list.
But right now he couldn’t guilt the shopping on Kurt or even on Santana, though both where highly involved in it. No, it had totally been his idea, though it actually was more like his responsibility to do it. You see, the matter is this: Christmas was just two weeks away, just two weeks, and he still hadn’t got his boyfriend anything as a present. They had already gone to their annual shopping trip the past week and they had bought everything for friends and family and, as Kurt thought, for each other. But truth was that he was still deliberating what to get for his boyfriend. He had thought about the usual stuff, of course, but nothing seemed to be good enough. No scarf, jacket, any piece of clothing he had seen was appealing or in Kurt’s taste or not in Kurt’s wardrobe already; he had thought to maybe get him a book but that sound boring and dull, well anything he thought of sounded boring, dull, simple and not especial. And this present should be big, this present should be awesome, this present should mean something.
This was the first Christmas they were going to celebrate in their apartment, the apartment they had moved in together a year or so ago. As soon as Kurt had finished college they had started looking for apartments on every possible place. Kurt had been living with Rachel and he was still living in the dorms while he finished his senior year. They looked for months until this perfect little flat appeared in an add on the newspaper. They saw it as soon as they were able and after a couple of rounds through it (mind it, it isn’t that big so they weren’t really big rounds) they decided to rent it. It was a nice place, not to big, but big enough as they could afford by now. It had a dinning room/living room/kitchen area that Kurt had said as soon as he saw it “It’ll do”. Blaine on the other hand loved it; he liked the open space and the easiness you could move from the couch to the kitchen. Besides that it had a lovely bedroom, a bathroom and a lot of white walls that Kurt had taken the time to paint and decorate to his liking in the months Blaine was still at the dorms finishing school. In the end the small plain empty space they had come to the first time turned into a wonderful and homey place. Of course, Kurt insisted that this was just their first apartment and that as soon as they got better jobs and pays they would get an even better one. Honestly, Blaine just loved the apartment because it was theirs and it felt like home, but he knew that as long as he was with Kurt home would be anywhere he was, so it really didn’t matter for him where they lived.
The first Christmas that had passed since they rented the flat, they spent it in Ohio as every other one before that. But since this year, the Hudson-Hummel’s felt like taking a little vacation they had insisted on spending the holiday season in their new little home in NYC. Blaine thought it actually had more to do with the fact that Burt and Carole wanted to spend some alone time away from home and Finn surely wanted to see Rachel, even though they were no longer together. Burt and Carole would be able to enjoy the perks of having a hotel room for themselves and Finn surely will be delighted to stroll through NYC with a recently single Rachel Berry. And he was betting that Finn and Carole were totally curious about their living space and Burt was coming to check on him and Kurt and maybe the talk they had had a few months before was responsible for that.
He had made the choice to do this long before he new he was going to end where he was right now by this time of the year. When they had visited Ohio for Thanksgiving (that was when they had learned they would be all spending Christmas in NY) he had talked to Burt about this practically just because. He knew this was the course their relationship was going even before he decided to point it that way, he was always sure about it and never ever doubted since the moment he first kissed Kurt Hummel in an empty side room of Dalton Academy over a bedazzled coffin so many years ago. Still it didn’t mean that he wasn’t nervous, about doing it and about talking it with the man he respected the most in this world and that incidentally was the father of his boyfriend. He was pleased to say that everything had gone alright between him and Burt (he is, though a little embarrassed to admit that he was holding his breath through the whole conversation and that he let it go with a big sense of relief after it was over with Burt chuckling at him because of his silliness). So that had reinforced his choice but he had been so nervous that he had decided to make his move long after the holiday season, he had been thinking about St. Valentine perhaps, but now everything kind of make sense. He couldn’t think of anything but that and he couldn’t find a present for Kurt and he had looked everywhere, this wasn’t his first shopping trip of the week, with Santana in tow complaining about his undecided he was. Besides, Christmas was kind of their thing, so why don’t do it now.
“Hey Hobbit, have you decided already or not? Because, I’m not getting any younger here and you still have to help me get Brit something” Santana’s voice broke through the mist of his thoughts as he looked intently at something in the glass counter.
“Yes. Believe it or not, yes.” He answered. “Excuse me miss, I’m taking this one”
“Lovely choice, I’m sure your girlfriend is going to love it”
“Boyfriend actually, and I sure hope so”
“Oh come one, Blaine! You know Kurt better you know yourself. We’ve been looking for this for ages because you wanted the perfect ring to propose and you totally found it cause if we wouldn’t we would still be out there looking for it, so please just get over it and man up for heaven’s sake” Santana almost blew up with exasperation, obviously as tired as Blaine was of going through shops and jewellery stores as they had been going on for the last week.
“Tana, this is pretty important if you haven’t noticed and I want everything to be perfect, so could you just shut up. You are making me even more nervous if that’s possible”

Kurt was completely excited about this and turned the visit into a whole event preparing everything as they where expecting the Queen instead of just his family. The whole place had garlands, mistletoe, ribbons, ornaments, stockings everywhere. It looked like one of the houses on the decoration magazines, and it surely was one of those where all the decoration had come from.
The table had Christmas linens, a magnificent craft made centrepiece and even the chairs had decorations too. There was a wreath on the door, garlands around the room, stockings hanging from the mantelpiece and little figurines on top of it among other things like snowballs and even some Christmas cards they had received. There were lights on all the windows and the tree on the corner of their living room, which of course was decorated with special ornaments, colour coordinated and that obviously lacked the silly decorations that Blaine wanted to put. Underneath it was a big pile of presents of every size and shape for them to exchange tomorrow while having their Christmas lunch. There were even decorations on the building’s hallways and stairways and Blaine wasn’t completely discarding the idea that Kurt had put up those too.
The funniest thing of all was that Kurt (as always), had manage to fill the place with Christmas themed stuff and it still looked tasteful. When Blaine had seen bag after bag, after bag, after bag of decorations he was afraid their little flat would look crowded by so much ‘spirit’. Not that he was against it, he loved Christmas, but if the deed had been on his hand it would have looked either lacking or too crowded and no one, especially Kurt, would have been pleased.
“Hey kid, where have you gone?” Burt asked taking Blaine out of his contemplations that were beyond just the decorations of their surroundings. They had just finished dinner, Blaine and Burt had offered to tidy up a little so everybody could talk and mingle, or more exactly for Carole to tour the place while Rachel and Finn chatted in the couch. The atmosphere was calmed and relaxed now that dinner was over and they were waiting till midnight to have a toast for the beginning of Christmas Day.
He knew that Burt had really offered them to do the chores for another reason than just be kind; and the butterflies in his stomach couldn’t keep still because of that. He hadn’t mentioned anything about his planes to his boyfriend’s father, though he knew he wasn’t going to say anything negative he still was very nervous about it. In fact, the nervousness had been increasing progressively since the moment he had finally decided on a ring; almost over a week ago. He would thought about it and get nervous, he then thought about the nerves and the butterflies started batting their wings harder, then he would feel the little ring box in his pocket so he would get stiff suddenly and by the time he had finally realized he was acting strange Kurt or anyone close to him would be looking at him concerned or strange, which did nothing to keep his nerves at bay. He had forgotten how many times he had almost dropped something out of distraction and the worried looks Kurt had thrown his way.
By now he felt like he was about to die of a heart attack. Incidentally he had felt observed the whole night. He knew that Kurt was probably watching him out of worry because he was definitely acting strange (in his effort to stay calm he was completely silent the whole evening and he kept spacing out); Burt surely suspected something which meant that Carole was in the loop of course; Finn kept glancing at him like if he had grown a second head and Rachel had this Cheshire-cat like smile and this air lie if she knew something important. However, that was impossible since he had only told Santana about what he intended t... Crap! Santana had obviously spilled to Rachel. He was going to kill her! Oh God! And if Rachel had told Kurt, oh God, oh God...
“Hey kid, are you there? You keep spacing out on me” Burt snapped his fingers in front of his face. “Are you okay? You know, I’m starting to worry in here. Did something happen? It’s everything okay between you two guys? Don’t tell me you had a fight on Christmas Eve”
“No! No. Everything’s fine. It’s just...” He paused to take a deep breath to calm his speeding heart. “I’m a little nervous, that’s all”
“Nervous? Why would you be nerv...oh” Blaine could perfectly see the moment that recognition dawned on Burt’s face. His quite angry expression turned into a knowing smile that he was starting to hate. Was everybody going to look at him like this if they were into his plans? “So you are going to do it tonight?” Blaine just nods fearing his voice breaking if he talked at all.
“That’s nice. It’s a nice time of the year for something like this, and a nice present for everybody. Also Kurt keeps saying that Christmas is kind of your thing”
“Yes, it kinda is. He said that to you?” The dreamy expression had found his face quickly.
“Yeah, well, since he met you it seems that he enjoys the holidays far more than before and he did mention that you always sing and do something together around this time of year. Which, I don’t really understand since you both are always singing and doing stuff together all the time. So you are nervous, why exactly. It’s not like he is going to say no. You know him as much as I do; he has been planning this moment since he was a kid, practically.”
“I-I...I don’t really know. I just am. I can’t help thinking what if he...” Blaine has been thinking so much. He doesn’t really know why, he knows everything is going to come out well; still, doubts kept circling his head.
“Stop right there, if you keep thinking all that stuff you are just going to stop yourself from doing it all together and then you’ll regret it a lot! You know, it’s okay to be nervous Blaine, it means that you really care about what you are going to do. But you don’t have to let nerves rule your life or you are going to miss out on a lot of the things that make life good. When I decided I was going to marry Carole I almost don’t ask her because I was nervous like hell. I thought what if everything goes wrong, what if the guys don’t like the idea, what if she doesn’t want to get married, what if, what if, what if. Then I came to my senses, decided to man up and just go and ask her, and deal with things as they come. And now, you know that didn’t come out wrong” Blaine had always admired Burt’s incredible power to calm him down, and the ability he had to talk to him man to man forgetting that he was his son’s boyfriend and treating him practically like a son. He was damn right, if he kept thinking like this things weren’t going to go anywhere and this is what he wants, what he has wanted for far too many years now.
“Although, if you waited a little more till, I don’t know, St. Valentine, it’ll be so much better, you know. More romantic and all that stuff” Blaine stared blankly to him. “No, I’m serious. It would also save me from a month of chores and 20 bucks I might or mightn’t have bet to Carole over the date you were going to ask him marriage”
“You better be kidding me. You were making bets about it?”
“Kid we are making bets since you came to the city, no kidding at all” Burt finished with a serious face though Blaine could see the little turn he was trying to control at the corners of his mouth. After a couple of minutes they were both laughing their asses of.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Music was still playing on the background while they finished tidying up what was left after everyone left. Well, it was more like Kurt was tidying up and Blaine was trying to while he watched Kurt and tried to gather up some courage. Then, the first few chords of one of his favourite songs in the whole world started sounded around them, giving him the perfect cue for what he was planning. He grabbed Kurt around the waist while he was returning from the kitchen to gather the glasses left over in their coffee table.
“Blaine?”
“Forget about the cleaning and come dancing with me”
“But...”
“Come on, I know you love this song as much as I do” Then the first voice started singing (I really can’t stay). “But Baby it’s cold outside” Blaine sang along to the second voice trying to entice his boyfriend to follow his lead and have this little moment between the two of them, like they had so many years ago.
Kurt, unable to resist the charm and plea in those beautiful hazel eyes, continued singing as they softly sway from side to side in the little free space they had on their living room. They slowly lost themselves to the music, turning the singing into a soft humming, enjoying each other’s company and proximity. Kurt rested his head in Blaine’s shoulder and relaxed completely in his hold while they kept swaying to the music. He felt deliriously happy in this precise moment. This was one of the best Christmas he could remember. His family had been here, they had had a lovely dinner and everything had come out exactly as planned, the same as saying perfect. He had to admit that the past week had been a bit challenging to say the least. With all the planning and arranging for tonight’s event, work and other compromises it had been a bit stressful. That without counting that Blaine had been acting oddly the whole time, including today. He didn’t understand why, but he knew that if it was something serious Blaine would have told him about his problems, however he was blissed out that they could have this little moment together. The almost perfect ending for a perfect night, almost, because he definitely had plans including them and their bed.
“Baby?” Blaine said trying as much as he could to hide the shakiness on it. Thankfully Kurt was more concentrated on nuzzling his neck, being a little ‘mhmm’ all the answer to his call. “I have something really import to tell you and... God, I don’t know how to say this. I...I-I...”
“Blaine? Is everything okay?” Kurt stood up straight now looking straight at him. A frown of concern darkening his features. They had stopped moving altogether now.
“Yes, everything’s okay -I’d like for people to stop asking me that tonight. It’s nothing bad. In fact I hope it’s something good for us.” Blaine then let go of Kurt’s waist with one hand to retrieve the little box he had been carrying with himself everyday for the last week.
“I know we said we were going to exchange gifts tomorrow with all the others, but this is for us more than just for you and I wanted this to be just our moment, though, there’s a lot of people involved already in it” Blaine grabbed the upper part of the box and pull it up, revealing it’s content. Inside there was a simple silver band with three rocks, two sapphires and a bit larger diamond in the middle.
“Kurt Hummel, would you marry me?” Blaine said staring at Kurt straight ahead while Kurt moved his eyes from Blaine’s and then back to the ring, a look of confusion and surprise printed on him.
Then his breathing started getting faster. “I...I... I need to sit down. Oh Dear Gaga” He exclaimed while he left the warmth of Blaine’s arms to sit on the couch. Blaine’s face fell, Kurt hadn’t said anything really but to him this was nothing but a bad sing. However he didn’t have the time right now as his boyfriend was hyperventilating a few feet away.
“Okay, shhh, shhh, its okay Kurt. Please breathe, you are turning blue. Deep breaths, baby. Nice and calm. In, out. In, out” Blaine sat down beside Kurt trying to calm him down enough for him not to suffocate and die just because of his proposal. Slowly, Kurt’s breathing went back to normal, or at least as normal as it would get now.
“Yes! Totally yes!”
“What?” Blaine was completely confused now.
“Yes, I want to marry you. A thousand times yes. Oh my! I can’t believe this is happening” Kurt said as he threw himself to Blaine, hooking his arms around his neck and peppering his face with kisses. He was completely shocked. At first he didn’t give credit to his ears, he couldn’t have heard what he thought he had. Then he looked to the box in Blaine’s hand and everything had come crashing down. He had really not been expecting this. Obviously he wanted to marry Blaine but he had thought since they hadn’t really talked about it seriously they were going to wait till they decided to take that step. And here comes Blaine, beautiful, wonderful, incredibly amazing Blaine with this little surprise to make his life even better than it already was. “I can’t believe you. Is this why you were so edgy all week?”
“Yeah. So you said yes right?” Blaine answered with a goofy smile.
“Of course I said yes! What else would I say? This is like a dream come true”
“Thanks God. So I guess that I should put this on your finger right?”
“You better” Kurt stared intently as Blaine took the ringer from the box and put it in his finger. It was beautiful. “This must have cost you a fortune, honey”
“It’s worth it. You deserve the world and more. Beside, this was the only one that was worthy to be compared to your beauty”
“Com on, shut up. Don’t be cheesy.” Kurt tried to sound annoyed but the bliss was still there in his voice.
“What? It’s the truth. Hey, I love you”
“I love you too. So much.” Kurt leaned down to join their lips once again. Quickly, the kiss turned more passionate, soon Kurt was crawling into Blaine’s lap, passing a leg to either side of his hips and trying to get them a close as possible.
They broke the kiss though Kurt stayed in Blaine’s lap and certainly looking without any intention of moving away, at least no soon he wanted to be as close to his Fiancé as much as possible. He still couldn’t believe it, he was engaged, they were going to marry, and if the matter was in his hands he would make sure it was soon. He had his head in Blaine’s shoulder feeling the other man breathe relaxed, completely unaware of his future husbands thoughts since his whole attention was directed to his left hand, were he was sporting the best Christmas present on his fourth finger. This certainly was a spectacular Christmas.
Blaine was completely spent, and elated. Now that he had finally done it he felt like he could breathe with ease once again. Not that he had doubted how this would go, he was certain that Kurt was going to say yes and that they were going to live happily ever after but there were always nerves in the middle and stupid brains producing ugly ‘What Ifs’. Well maybe he had feared the result of all this for a moment there, but he trusted in ‘them’.
“You know, this totally kills the present I had for you” Kurt laughed still staring to the ring. “Now I’m rethinking if I should give it to you or get you something better”
“What? No! No, no, no, I want my present, it doesn’t matter if it’s small, I want it all the same” Blaine whined.
“Hush! Didn’t you learn when you were little that Christmas is not about the presents?”
“Well of course I did, but your presents are way too cool to miss out on them” Blaine stated matter-of-factly.
“Well, you know I could give you part of my present now and the other one tomorrow when we exchange gifts with the others at lunch”. Kurt said calmly.
“Now, that sounds way better”
“Well, honestly I think you’ll like it a lot, you just have to come over to the bedroom with me and retrieve your...present”. He slowly got up from Blaine’s lap, talking huskily and moving his hips while taking out his shirt.
Blaine obviously was up in seconds running after Kurt to the bedroom, anxious to get his present.
