what's a good gift for a parent's big birthday?  My mom is turning 50 next month.  I want to do something special for her.  The original plan was to fly out and surprise her, which I could still do, but tickets are pricey ($400 or so; flying to minnesota is so expensive!) and I can't go for more than like 2 days ( Read more... )

you could get a gift, something you know she would like, and make a video of yourself saying "happy birthday mom, sorry I cant be there..." blah blah blah.

Maybe you should send her a gift certificate to a favorite day/spa over there? Even though that may cost a lot of money, at least you can show her a day of pampering for just her.;)

My mom's actually made me scrapbooks a couple of times, which is how I got the idea to make you one in the first place ;p

Heidi's idea is actually a really good one so maybe I will do that. She does like the spa, but not as much as she used to. She gets acupuncture and a massage once a week, but it's covered by health insurance (can you believe that??) so it doesn't seem that special for her to get something like that.

My massages used to be covered by GHC - well, 50% anyway. Accupunture would have been if I had used it at all.

If she gets therapeutic massage, a spa might still be fun just for manicure and pedicure part. :)

You could send her a nice picture frame with a picture of you in it!

I've done the picture frame thing already too, twice.

I could go for the spa, but I feel like she'd never use it. She's letting her hair dye grow out, so she can go gray, and she never ever has her nails painted anymore. It's really hard since she's gotten into this super religious lifestyle. Like she's really over getting anything material.

Maybe I could give money in her name to a charity or something? I don't know.

When my mom turned 50, my sis and I did the traditional gold thing and gave her a gold satin nightgown and a frosted gold heart pendant. Of course, we were young teens then...I don't know if this is a good-enough gift from an employed adult.

employed? hah. You seem to forget I'm in graduate school ;p

(I made more money at 21 than I do now, at 28) but that's neither here nor there :p

re: the gold. That would be a good idea, but I just got her a gold necklace for christmas. And even that was a stretch, as my mom only wears religious medals now and not jewelry.

Yoga lessons or a gift certificate for a massage/spa visit.
