A Senate Party for your consideration.

Aus. politics below the cut.

I discovered just recently (when reading a US biology blog actually) that a recently-ish formed party, the Secular Party is running for the Senate in the upcoming election.

I hadn't heard of them before, so I thought I'd have a look at what they were about.

They're running on a platform of separation of religion from state institutions, impartiality between religions and the protection of human rights from violation on the basis of religious doctrine.

It looks to me like they weren't registered as a Party in time for the party name to appear on the ballot (maybe it was for a different reason, so don't quote me).

Anyway, in NSW they're Group J on the ticket (Ian Bryce and John August*), Group P in Victoria (they're running two candidates in every state; if you care and you're not from NSW or Vic, they have how to vote info on their website).

*I knew John fairly well 20-odd years ago. when he was a student at Macquarie. It was a suprise to rediscover him running for the Senate. He was a decent guy when I knew him, as well as a think-outside-the-square type.

If you think those issues are important, you might want to have a look at their website and maybe consider giving them some vote-love.
