Congress is staying in session over the weekend because the public are pressuring their representatives into not supporting the $700bn bailout. Not that it was reported in the mainstream media, but there were demonstrations yesterday in 34 state capitals against the bailout (including Raleigh =). I was discussing this a few days ago on THE INTERNETS, and someone asked us to imagine if someone had proposed a $700 investment in education, or reforming health care, or shoring up social security. All things which threaten the long term stability of the nation in the same way that the financial system does. If that had happened, whatever poor jackass that brought it up would have been laughed out of the country, or tarred and feathered and rode out on a rail.
Which got me thinking about moral hazard, and how this country believes it only applies to poor people. Which just made me sad.
