Doing Missions whenever you can before moving on to the story really helps. I did maybe ten missions at the very first save point and just kept doing a handful at every save point and I've found that it makes the battles in the main story MUCH easier to do. (Maybe it's a flaw in the system

in XIII-2 i leveled up pretty quickly by never riding chocobos and getting lost a lot so i'll probably end up getting lost a lot exploring the enviroments
speaking of XIII-2 i don't even know how many potions and phoenix downs i've gone through during that game. in every final fantasy i've played i always neglect all of the other items except elixirs which i save for the final boss (and never need).
i've been thinking about replaying IX because i miss summons and honestly serah and noel (who's name was just waaay to on the nose. noel kreiss...?! like really squenix...? jesus from the future is going to save the world...? ok) are insufferable and the worst part of the game. pretty much the dialogue and lack of emotional complexity in any of the young characters is unbearable. all of the older characters that made cameos didn't seem to be suffering from a severe mental development disorder that caused them to repeat everything they said in triplicate and treat saving the world like a last minute trip to the mall to find a outfit for
