Diamond read her brother's letter twice, to be sure that he'd left no room for doubt in his reply.

My dear, darling baby sister. Have you completely taken leave of your senses since you married the Thain's heir? Taking whisky to a DRAGON!!! Is it that you want me to be toasted like a bit of cheese by that great, fearsome thing? Do you have any ( Read more... )

'ere now, Miss Diamond! Your brother has the right of it! Is this a wise thing for you to be doin'? Word or no word, you can't be trustin' a dragon, so Mister Bilbo sez and he ought to have the knowin' of it right up front! Especially with Old Smaug, who's had more than his share of dwarves and men and goodness only knows what else in his gullet. He's a villain, he is!

But you're a headstrong lass, or so I've heard, and I'm thinkin' that my words won't sway you when your mind's made up. Truth be told, that's the Gamgee way of it, too. So if you must insist on goin' off to see the old Maggot in 'is hole, please, please, don't be goin' alone!

I've extended an invitation to any that will come, but I won't be waiting long! No sense in keeping a dragon waiting.

Ooooh, good Trickster, you make me a tempting offer! I would be loving some company on the road, for truth be told, I am more than a wee bit afraid of dragons. But sir, good sir, I am also a wee bit afraid of Tricksters! It's your nature to cause mischief, and mischief leads to unintended consequences, as we Tooks know all too well. I cannot have any along who cause mischief, intended or otherwise, nor any who wish harm.

If if would not cause offense, I will consider your offer and give you my response tomorrow.

Well, I am currently rather...sedate. I doubt you'd have any fear of any tricks I might play. *grin*

And no, it does not offend me for you to consider my offer. I would think less of you if you just jumped into it without considering it.

*seems distracted*

If you give me your oath that you will cause no harm, then you may ride with me. But you must meet me at the borders of the Shire. King Elessar has decreed that no Big folk may enter the Shire, and while he referred to the likes of mere mortal Men, I think it best that apply to the likes of Tricksy cats who walk in the guise of Men, too.
