Ill Met at Carrock

Diamond knew that her quest to seek out the counsel of the famous skin-changer Beorn had added several unnecessary days to her journey. The more direct route, the more prudent route as her impatient companions had been want to remind her more than once, would have been to make directly for the Old Forest Road that traversed Mirkwood. Diamond was ( Read more... )

Loki was...well, nervous. Not for himself so much, as there was little he had to fear from really...anything, in Arda. However, he had this sense about when things were about to go badly. Probably came from his line of work. ;) He kept fidgeting and told Iolaus to keep a sharp eye out, though Loki himself was watching everything. Not for the first or last time he again debated just popping them all to the Withered Heath, though he really preferred for it not to become known just everything he was capable of.

So instead he sat, and waited, and watched, fidgeting with a long knife he had produced from...somewhere.

Tending the camp fire, Iolaus suddenly stopped. He did not look up or show any other indication that anything was amiss, but he did steal a glance to the right. A skilled hunter, trained by hunters, he had heard the snap of a twig when another might have noticed nothing. A discoloration in the shadows and slight movement was all he needed to see. He leaned forward and reached for one of the larger branches they'd gathered for firewood. "We're about to have company," he told trickster_loki quietly as he grasped the stick. "Hope you're up for a bit of exercise."

Loki grins at Iolaus, "I could use the exercise."

He then frowned at the stick the warrior was wielding, "Can you use anything besides a stick to fight with? Sword, perhaps?"

Without waiting for a reply, he pulled a sword from wherever he'd gotten his knife from and handed it over, "You might need it."

"Niiiiccce!" said Iolaus, admiring the sword. "Actually, the stick would have been fine, but this will do very well, thanks!" Standing up, he turned to the shadowy figures and called cheerfully. "So! You guys gonna just lurk there or what? Ya know, probably best if you run now. It'll save us some time."

The more that Diamond mulled over Gunnlaugbeorn's disturbing words, the more concerned she became about her companions. In her mind's eye, she could actually see Orcs wielding terrible weapons charging out of the woods and attacking her friends!

She spurred Plum on and urged the pony to run as fast as he could. She didn't know or didn't even care if it was just her own imagination tormenting her with these visions, or if she was having a moment of second sight, but now she was certain that her friends were outnumbered and under attack!

OOC: *wink*

Out of the shadow the the Rock ran some of the ugliest creatures Iolaus had ever set eyes on (and that was saying alot, since he'd seen some pretty rough looking fellas). They ran like men and waved nasty looking weapons like men, but these certainly were not men. Their war cries were gutteral and very animalistic but they weren't animals, either ( ... )

Loki looked rather...unholy, or at least, he had an expression of unholy glee on his face and fire in his eyes. He was fighting, slashing at any orc who ventured near him with his knives (yes, he pulled another out), pulling any and every trick he knew to bring the orcs down. He wasn't a god of fighting or war, necessarily, but he did enjoy the occasional spot of mayhem and violence after all.

Whoa! He looks rather...unholy, thought Iolaus. Kinda like Ares when he's really really pissed. Yup. Loki could take care of himself just fine ( ... )

Diamond arrived back at the Carrock in time to Iolaus_lj and trickster_loki dispatch the last Orcs. The campsite reeked of blood, all of it Orc blood as it turned out. Neither of Diamond's companions had been hurt. She slid off the back of her exhausted pony and ran over to ask them what happened. She also informed them what Gunnlaugbeorn had told her about the fell creatures that were gathering in the Northern wastes. Orcs, wargs, and trolls, these things she was familiar with from tales. She wasn't sure what a vampire was, but knew that it had to be an evil thing if it was associating with these other foul things.

Diamond bade the men to pile the Orc bodies into a pile and burn them. They did this only under protest, thinking it wiser to just leave and let the carrion eaters have their way. Diamond insisted. She would not leave corpses littering the Carrock. Even Orcs deserved a funeral pyre. Then they hitched the tired pony back to the cart and headed south, toward Mirkwood forest.
