Never, ever, under any circumstance, ask someone if he or she is an intern. Come on people.

If someone is an intern, you make her feel small. If someone is NOT an intern, it's offensive.

I don't care how young someone looks.

I just wait till an introduction, since everyone over here is introduced like, "This is blahblahblah, who's the new blahblah," or "I'd like you to meet blahblahblah, who'll be interning with the department for a few months."

But you don't ASK.
