If what you've got gives you trouble, take it back and get a motherboard based on the AMD780G chipset, along with the cheapest AMD CPU you can find. Spend your money on 4Gb of DDR2 800 and about three hard drives and eSATA/USB enclosures - backup is more important than specs.
Actually what I've ordered is the AMD780G chipset so that sounds like good news. It's the Realtek sound and Lan that I'm expecting to give me trouble. Good point about the backup, I'll only have the one drive initially so backups will be to the old machine somewhere or DVD. But picking up another drive or two will be high on the upgrade list. Ah, and the MB has an eSATA port on the back panel, neat, I hadn't noticed that.
The Realtek RTL8111/8168B and ATI Azalia sound worked out of the box for me, and video is fairly well behaved, too - simply installed with the VESA driver, then use the restricted driver manager to pull in the proprietary driver.
