Another apology

Jul 19, 2010 10:57

Who: Magnus and Alec
What: Magnus apologizes
Where: Main house: Alec's Room
When: Late evening, but Magnus really has no concept of time

Magnus was embarrassed, hurt, aggrieved, and wrong. He had pushed Alec’s buttons, knowingly. Some part of his mind told him that he’d done it to help him deal with the pent up anger about Max. But the majority of the warlocks mind knew it was jealousy.

He trusted Alec, but honestly, it was only to an extent. Most any man in either this world or the one they came from could flirt outrageously, promise to make Alec insanely happy, mean it, and Magnus knew that Alec wouldn’t think twice about the offer. The Shadowhunter was that faithful, and full of integrity, that even if he were tempted the teen would never act in any way that would hurt Magnus. But if Jace … The Parabiti was another matter entirely. Magnus was convinced that the foster brother would always come first with Alec. And if the blond ever switched teams, Alec would be … well, not with Magnus.

Part of it was also mixed up with the warlock’s pride. He didn’t want Alec to be with him because Alec couldn’t have Jace. He wanted to be wanted more than the other Shadowhunter. Magnus wanted Alec to come to his own conclusion that regardless of Jace’s sexual partner preferences and availability, that Alec wanted Magnus more. Alec was too nice, he hated for anyone to feel hurt, and he put them in order of who he was most loyal to. He would even protect their feelings to his own detriment.

Even if he knew the relationship wasn’t everything that Alec dreamed of, he would stay with Magnus, because of that sense of loyalty. Yes, there was a physical attraction, on both their parts. The warlock didn’t want to be convenient at the beginning, and then trap the boy with a fidelity pledge that wasn’t Alec’s ideal.

And so Magnus had pushed buttons. Pushed and pushed and pushed. Until Alec was forced to strike back, and the warlock was left gasping for breath on his bedroom floor.

Magnus would have apologized right away, Given Alec a little time to calm down, and then the warlock would have sought him out and apologized profusely. Explained his feelings, said out loud what he wanted from Alec. Talk about how and why the teen was so special, and valued. But Alec had called him a downworlder.

It was always something amazing that Alec never seemed to clump Magnus in with other non humans. He had always had respect for the warlock, and his work. In a place where Magnus had worked so hard to have a position of respect, and where most people only saw him as an extension of his parentage, that Alec saw past that made him shine all the more.

Magnus had spent a few days lolling about the house, meeting a few more people, pouring over each and every pair of shoes that Cindy owned, pulling together outfits for her, and trying to avoid another ice cream and wine binge. The time was brutal. The knowledge that he did love Alec, wanted to apologize to him for letting his insecurities get the best of him, for driving him to the edge and then pushing him over, conflicted heavily with the thought that Alec may have been very good at hiding the fact that he believed the warlock to be a downworlder, a creature.

It took a week for Magnus to send a message via STEVE asking what room Alec was in. It was another few days before Alec responded. It gave the bruises time to heal, so that a few minutes after he finished messaging Alec, he was standing at the Shadowhunter’s door knocking. He knew he'd be expected, the room number wouldn't have been given otherwise.
