Character Name: Rangiku Matsumoto
Character Series: Bleach (manga; screw anime filler, okay)
Character Age: SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS DEAD, but we’ll call her 27
Background: Do you know how much I hate doing the names in Western order...
Here you go! That section, plus the plot section, will give you a great idea of where she’s coming from. RELEVANT BITS: She was rescued from starvation by Gin Ichimaru, who identified her spiritual power; he gave her a name and a birthday, but eventually ditched her without much of a word. She followed him to the shinigami academy; later on, she helped identify the power of and assist the child who would become her own division captain, Toushirou Hitsugaya. Not much is known of her real history, but it’s heavily implied that she was mostly, if not completely alone before meeting Gin.
For ease of apping, I’m taking her from chapter 355; she is still unconscious, being treated by Kira.
Personality: Rangiku is loyal, first and foremost. Her loyalty lies with her friends, especially those who have been in battle with her; her captain; and with Gin, to some extent. She’ll protect them, but generally she holds back until she’s certain she is needed. Playing the hero doesn’t really appeal to her, and she normally chooses to let people fight their own fights. The exception to this is when they are up against Gin and she’s relatively sure they’ll lose, or if she simply doesn’t want them to face him. If it’s about to be a curb stomp, sometimes she’ll step in on a case-by-case basis. She’s very smart about fighting, all told!
Rangiku’s lack of hesitation in cheering people up shows that she cares very much for them; and whether it’s through incessant tickling, gentle scolding, forced stripping, or drunken fun times, she’s always there for them. If she has a negative opinion of someone’s actions or thoughts, she generally keeps them to herself. In her opinion, we all have to make our mistakes and learn from them; to that same end, she knows her own flaws, and she knows she’s not really one to give advice on such serious matters unless solicited (or unless it’s life-or-death, or concerning, again, Gin).
She is bubbly! Nine times out of ten she is all smiles, off on some shopping spree or an adventure that you really don’t want to know about if you’d like to remain sane. There are times when she will play the ditz to get out of work or out of particular situations; usually people are too distracted by her magnificent bosom to really catch on. However, people who see through that generally appreciate her lightest moments, especially when she uses them to cheer people up! Her best friends (shall I say BOSOM FRIENDS?) are frequently subjected to her drinking binges and parties, during which SHE remains clothed but hardly anyone else does. There are lighthearted jabs all around, and she will playfully cut down her friends with little bits of fashion or personality wisdom; however, she’s harmless. She reads fashion mags and romance novels instead of working; yes, that gets her called lazy!
The aspect of Rangiku's personality most frequently ignored, though, is her deep and continuous melancholy. She’s a thoughtful character who has been through difficult situations-from starvation to repeated abandonment. Occasionally, these thoughts draw her into herself, and she becomes very serious. Though usually a shockingly lazy woman of action, during those times she generally sits and reflects upon things; at these times, she will occasionally give unsolicited advice as though it’s one of the more important things in the world. There’s a slight desperation in her loneliness, though she doesn’t attach herself to people unnecessarily. In fact, she rejects almost all suitors-especially ones who show intense interest-in favor of being single and free. This can ostensibly be tied back to her implied obsession with Gin, who her entire life is tied to.
When called upon to be serious, she is a formidable foe in battle. She is highly analytical when it comes to fighting, showing a great capability for the use of tactics (especially with her Haineko and its abilities). There isn’t a hint of her laziness at that time; rather, she becomes intensely serious, only shifting away from that to playfully insult her enemies. This shows her as a woman capable of manipulation, but also as someone who chooses not to use that skill to its fullest and most cruel unless times are dire.
...Or the Shinigami Women’s Association needs some funds. Then, all bets are off (and so are your clothes, guys!).
Addendum: Rangiku, when faced with situations where other people are worse off or sadder than she is, will make sure they get the attention instead of her, Likewise, if her melancholy is called out, or if attention is brought to her situation, she will deflect attention away rather immediately. While she may seem like an attention whore--and sometimes she is one--she'd rather it be on her own terms. It's a slight insecure streak, as well as a desire to see the past as done and the present as something to cherish and enjoy, that shows through this.
[It has also been revealed in the manga that her hougyoku was stolen by Aizen, and that this was why Gin became a shinigami in the first place; presumably he never told her this, but it hasn't been completely explained. This may become relevant!]
Abilities: Well, Rangiku is a shinigami, and as such she has gobs of delicious powers! Her natural powers include ENORMOUS BOOBIES which seem to attract men from miles away; the mangaka has actually stated that no man in the Gotei 13 can say no to her, and can you blame them? Other natural powers include high skills in tactical nudity maneuvers/strategy, better than average battle endurance, and a high degree of sword skill.
Her shinigami powers, though, include the use of her shikai, or first sword release. With the command “Growl!” she can release Haineko, a cloud of ash that can cut through almost anything at her will. As with all zanpakuto (that’s the sword) , hers has a personality. A really BAD personality, actually. Sadly, this means she hasn’t been able to talk it into revealing the means by which she could obtain her bankai (second release). She also has the ability to use both binding and attack arts, which are like magical spells. These are called kidou.
Other spiritual/magical abilities: flash steps (quick movement, average level).
Note that in order for any of the powers to work (including her zanpakuto’s release), she has to have regained her reiatsu (spiritual energy). Additionally, in order to be as high up as she is, she exhibits the traits of VERY high spiritual energy, though hers is dwarfed by her captain’s.
Sample Entry: Have some delicious
Dear Mun!
