One of the biggest obstacles to a person dealing with thier own mental health problems (me included) involved accepting to myself that i had a valid illness even if its an invisible one.

theres a website called "but you don't look sick" and while it mostly looks at illnesses of the body rather than the mind it helped me look at stuff better. The "Spoon Theory" is useful too. http://www.butyoudontlooksick.com/the_spoon_theory/

Hope its some help :)

I live for that site!
I have mental health issues and Fibromyalgia and my little sister has athsma and type 1 diabetes so it feels as though it's written for us.

I highly recommend it.

Yeah, I have mental health issues and IBS and a couple of other problems and the spoon theory has been a great help. My mum has M.E. and its helped her explain it to other people really well.

Just been and looked and the spoon theory is so good! It is really hard to explain it to people, with my family i've just about managed so they know that if i say i'm having a "bad saucepan day" they know that microwave meals and cold snacks are the way forward because a saucepan is just too hard.

Altho it was quite stressful beforehand (no sleep the night before etc) once i was there it was good to look at all of my problems over the years as a whole, made both me and the nurse take it seriously and get an idea of what level i'm at. If you can get referred to a mental health nurse practitioner i'd recommend it, the one i saw was really easy to talk to, and although she wasn't strictly meant to be counseling or diagnosing me, it felt like i'd had a bit of both when i left.
