India: Microcosm of risk and reward?

India was viewed for very long by the west as a romantic and exotic destination. In the last decade this perception has changed to some extent with India taking centre stage as a potential growth engine. With the Mumbai terror attacks and the global slowdown hitting India it has quickly become the microcosm of much of what we have to deal with ( Read more... )

I have to say that it is interesting that it quite is this sort of microcosm. I was thinking along the lines of the socio-economic view, where you have such great wealth and technology juxtaposed with abysmal poverty. Being Indian-American and going to India provided real shock for me. In Mumbai I would see a well-to-do thirtysomething on his cell phone and right next to him would be an impoverished child collecting dirty water to drink. This widening rich-poor gap illustrates the division between the developed and developing and even as India reaches towards the 'developed' side, so many issues of the country is overlooked.

India is Resilient oscar_rush December 15 2008, 02:04:55 UTC
I think India is resilient enough to withstand attacks like this...."What that cannot kill you will make you stronger"....This is only a temporary setback for the economy and the security forces.

My heart goes out to the families of those innocent victims who were ruthlessly murdered by a bunch of fanatics.

The point about terrorism is that it has been a scourge and has been a real threat to India long before terrorism and, indeed the word 'terrorism', entered the lexicon of modern-day news and 24/7 news channels. India and Indians have borne the brunt of terror for the last 25 years and it would be foolish to imagine that this attack would change or alter the course of India's development. This is simply because India's time has come and whatever it is that Pakistan or any other state has to do by bleeding India "by a thousand cuts", the Indian economy and its people would bounce back and occupy its rightful place in the world as the power that has the moral authority to clamp down on terrorism and spread the concept of liberty, democracy and peace all over the world.

India will maybe forgive but shall never forget.
